The last units for DBA

 This post celebrates a big goal, these are the last DBA models in 1/72 scale I own, with this lot all the ancient stuff I ever had is done, some of them (the Samnite cavalry) go back to probably 2005 or 2006.

Now the collection of ancient models in 1/72 totals 737 models and allows us (mostly me, IlVJ lost interest in DBA long ago) to cover the most common Ellenistic and Classical period armies with Greeks, Macedonians, Tracians, Carthaginians, Gauls, Romans, Hispanics and few more.

I can consider this period covered in this scale and move forward with colonial, Napoleonic and modern era troops.

Back from Italy

 I just got back from a quick (way to quick) trip to Italy, I was there for a couple of weeks to see the family and friends I left behind when I moved to Canada.

It was very nice, I ate a lot of pizza and did a bit of tidying up in the pile of stored miniatures, I still had a few primed models left behind from 2016 and I took some with me to paint, but there are more there waiting.

While packing my stuff for the trip, I remembered that I had some 1/72 Hat romans I painted years ago with plain white shields, so I made sure to pack a sheet of decals to fix the problem.

Since I got back I have not painted anything, but I hope to do something this weekend, I am one figure away from being able to post the first part of my new addition to the Badab War project, the loyalist marines I painted in the last year, after those there will be the very very small part of renegades.

As you might have noticed, I decided to drop the double language and just write in English, I feel it doesn't really make any more sense to keep the Italian part, let me know in the comments if you think I should keep it.

DBA Greek hoplites/Opliti Greci per DBA

 The 1/72 painting goes on, this week we have 10 stands of DBA Greek hoplites, 6 Thebans and 4 Spartans, to go with some that IlVJ had painted many years ago, to which I had added sometimes later.

With this stuff I should be able to complete the Theban army, but the Spartans might need few more stands. Since at the moment I am not really playing any DBA, I'm ok with waiting to see if I come across more hoplites by chance.

If I'll manage to complete the Spartans I will then have 3 city states armies: Thebes, Sparta and Athens (an army I painted about 15 years ago), so I will have what little variety I can in hoplites army.

La pittura degli 1/72 prosegue, questa settimana ho 10 basi di opliti greci per DBA, 6 di Tebani e 4 di Spartani, da agguingere a quelli che IlVJ dipinse molti anni fa ed a cui io aggiunso qualcosina un po' piu' di recente.

Con queste truppe riesco a completare un esercito di Tebani, ma gli Spartani hanno ancora bisogno di alcune basi. Siccome al momento non sto realmente giocando a DBA, mi accontento di aspettare e vedere se in futuro incappero' in una manciata di opliti per caso, con cui completare gli Spartani.

Se riusciro' a completare gli spartani, avro' 3 eserciti di Greci: Tebe, Sparta e Atene (un esercito che dipinsi circa 15 anni fa), cosi' da avere quanta piu' varieta' possibile in termini di eserciti di opliti.

More DBA elements and 1/72 historical miniatures/Altri elementi per DBA e miniature storiche in 1/72

 I recently finished a big commission of WWII Soviet infantry with Quick Shade, so I dipped, at the same time, the few 1/72 models I had ready with a base coat, this slowly moves my huge 1/72 project forward.

I also completed few more Samurai in 1/72, but those are so slow going that it will be quite a while before I'll be able to post the complete project.

Ho recentemente completato una frossa commissione di fanteria Sovietica fatta con il Quick Shade, quindi, allo stesso tempo, ho dippato alcuni altri pezzi storici in 1/72 per portare lentamente avanti l'enorme progetto di finire tutti i pezzi in 1/72 che ho.

Early imperial roman infantry. These are leftover Early Imperial roman legionaries I had from my childhood, they were missing their shields (a part from the centurion), so I used some leftover repubblican shields, so I consider them from the transitioning time under Mario when the equipment was slowly upgraded, probably historically incorrect, but at least I saved few models

The project to finish the ton of 1/72 models I have is slowly progressing.

Among other things, I'm trying to complete the DBA stuff I have, here are some figures I had needed paint to complete some DBA armies.

More will come in the future, but this is a good start.

The lost army/L'armata perduta

This is a DBA Macedonian army that Garner painted for IlVJ when he was living in Japan (perhaps around 2007), but I only realized it had never been photographed until last year, so I made sure I rectified the mistake as soon as I got back on holiday.

Questo e' un esercito di Macedoni per DBA che Garner aveva dipinto per IlVJ quendo viveva in Giappone (probabilmente intorno al 2007), ma mi sono accorto di non averlo mai fotografato solo l'anno scorso, quindi mi sono premurato di provvedere appena arrivato in Italia.

An unusual post/Un post insolito

It's been a really long time since I pisted something DBA.

This models, even if I painted one of them in the past, is a special one.

Back around 2003, just after IlVJ moved to Japan, after having been out of the hobby for almost 8 years, he told me about this new idea he had about playing DBA using 1/72 models. 

He had seen a nice box set from Zvezda with a couple of elephants and wanted me to buy it for him and bring it over when I visited.

He then actually started to play DBA and bought all sorts of 1/72 armies, but never got around to paint those elephants.

One of them was later painted for him by our friend Garner for his Macedonians (that we never took pictures of, but we will, hopefully) and this is the other one that went back to Italy and then followed me to Canada when I moved and now, finally, got painted about 17 years after having been bought.

So this is the Hannibal elephant that travelled 3 continents and settles down in Canada, quite heroic!

E' veramente molto che non posto nulla di DBA.

Questo pezzo, anche se ne dipinsi uno uguale in passato, e' molto speciale.

Intorno al 2003, subito dopo che IlVJ si trasferi' in Giappone, dopo circa 8 anni senza hobby, mi parlo' di questa idea di giocare a DBA con soldatini in 1/72.

Aveva visto una scatola della Zvezda con due elefanti e mi chiese di comprarne una da portargli nella mia prossima visita.

Incomincio' poi a giocare a DBA e compro' ogni sorta di esercito in 1/72, ma non dipinse mai quei due elefanti.

Uno fini' per essere dipinto dal nostro amico Garner per l'esercito di Macedoni del VJ (di cui non abbiamo mai fatto delle foto, ma provvederemo), l'altro e' questo, che torno' poi in Italia e fini' poi per seguirmi in Canada quando mi trasferii e che ho finalmente dipinto dopo circa 17 anni da quando e' stato comprato.

Quindi questo e' l'elefante di Annibale che ha viaggiato per 3 continenti per poi sistemarsi comodamente in Canada, decisamente eroico!

I just came back after my long italian holiday, it was really nice and I also found some painted figures I forgot to take pictures of before I left in 2016.
Back then I posted some 1/72 DBA gallic cavalry, but I actually had more finished that, for some reason I had not photographed.
Here it is with the chariots and the stands I had posted back then.

Sono appena tornato dalla mia lunga vacanza in Itala, e' andata molto bene ed ho anche trovato alcune miniature dipinte che avevo dimenticato di fotografare quando partii nel 2016.
Allora avevo postato della cavalleria gallica per DBA in 1/72, ma in realta' ne avevo altra che, per qualche ragione, non avevo fotografato.
Eccola qui insieme a quella postata in precedenza ed ai carri dello stesso esercito.

Few years ago IlVJ started a BBDBA project to build a big Gauls army. After a whle the project drifted, as it often happens, into a pile of half painted figures resting in some box. No more than a year ago I started painting some old ESCI barbarians to use as Gauls and IlVJ gave me all his almost finished ones to try and get the project finished.
Well, we are almost there, five more cavalry stands and we will be done.
For the moment I finished the chariots.

Alcuni anni fa IlVJ incominciò un progetto di BBDBA per mettere insieme un essercitone di Galli. Dopo un po', però, il progetto divenne, come spesso succede, un micchio di soldatini mezzi dipinti in una scatola. Non più di un anno fa io incominciai a dipingere dei vecchi barbari della ESCI, da usare come Galli, fu allora che IlVJ mi diede i suoi quasi finiti perchè completassi il suo progetto originale.
Be, ci siamo quasi, ancora cinque basi di cavalleria e avremo concluso.
Per il momento ho finito i carri.

The dipping won't dip!/Il dipping non dippa!

I recently painted some DBA cavalry stands, but had a nasty surprise when I dipped the models, a treatment I find excellent for soft plastic 1/72, it makes them fast to paint and keep them from chipping during handling.
The only problem is that I bought an Army painter Light shade and it's so light you can barely see any shading on the models. I'm very disapponted and I think I'll have to find another darker shade dipping or, for the time being do some sort of shading with other paints and use the "transparent" one just to fix the paint on the models.

Ho finito di recente alcune basette di cavalleria per DBA, ma ho avuto una brutta sorpresa quando ho dippato i pezzi, un trattamento che trovo ottimo per i soldatini 1/72 in plastica molle, è un metodo rapido di pittura e fissa bene i colori sui pezzi che quindi non si scrostano giocando.
Il problema è che avevo comprato una latta di Army painter "light shade" che si è rivelato talmente chiaro da non ombreggiare per nulla i modelli. Sono molto contrariato e penso che dovrò trovare un altro dipping più scuro o, per il momento, ombreggiare i pezzi in un altro modo e usare il dipping solo per fissare i colori.

DBA stands from the far east/Basi di DBA dall'estremo oriente

These are some Gauls that IlVJ and our friend Garner painted more than five years ago. The idea was to make a BBDBA gallic army. During my last trip to Japan, on Christmas, IlVJ gave me a box full of dipped models who were just missing shields and base.
It was a matter of few hours, once back, to give them shields and base them. I still have to paint cavalry and chariots, let's hope they won't be too long.

IlVJ also gave me a mantlet, I don't know what I'll use it for, but I painted it anyway.
I also painted three bases of early republican romans.

Questi sono alcuni Galli che IlVJ e il nostro amico Garner dipinsero oltre cinque anni fa. L'idea era di fare un esercito per BBDBA. Nel mio ultimo giro in Giappone, IlVJ mi ha dato una scatola piena di galli dipinti e dippati a cui mancavano solo gli scudi e i piedistalli.

Una volta tornato a casa è sata una questione di ore ed avevano scudi e basette. Devo ancora dipingere la cavalleria e i carri, speriamo che non mi ci voglia troppo.

IlVJ mi ha anche dato un mantelletto, non so cosa mai ne farò, ma l'ho dipinto comunque.

Ho anche dipinto tre basette di primi romani repubblicani.
