The Odyssey myth

Homer’s the Odyssey is a work of fiction. The conversation should end there…and yet for a bunch of Dunning Kruger afflicted individuals on the right of murikkkan’ politrikkks it hasn’t.

Many works of fiction are spun from a grain of truth. That’s what helps make them feel somewhat believable instead of coming across as complete nonsense. But, the idea that there could be a “historically accurate” version of the Odyssey is laughable at best, and dangerous at worst, because while the former likely implies a lack of intellect and education beyond that of typical anti-elitist’s lack of knowledge and worldly experience, the latter demonstrates willful ignorance or deliberate denial of the truth, resulting the scourge that currently dominates the MAGA-cultist’s approach that that which is fake should not only be considered real, but can actively be made as such through a sincere enough belief.

The Odyssey is an epic poem serving as an allegory for the human condition by telling the story of a physical journey as a representation of the process of self-realization and actualization. The verisimilar work is in no way meant to be a documentary. The trace amounts of historical fact are vehemently overshadowed by vast amounts of mythology and folklore weaving fantastical experiences of trauma, temptation, and sacrifice into a process of maturation and redemption. Beyond the surface descriptions of people, places, and things, there’s a deep subtext exploring relationships and politics, critiquing philosophy, instinct, intellect, and ego, and questioning the influences of destiny and chaos. Focusing solely on action of a grand adventure misses the broader concepts the poem implicitly and explicitly makes about war, addiction, romance, death and most importantly, identity.

The original poem is just words. There are no pictures to reference. Just descriptions in varying detail of places and people that occasionally didn’t even actually exist anywhere other than in the poem itself. Further, of all the real life people and places that are mentioned none were photographed or filmed back then. The remaining artifacts of that era survived wars and weather, vandals and looters, but even if they were intact still could only provide a partial glimpse of what reality might have been as interpreted by the artists and agents crafting them. The words attributed to Homer were eventually translated from Greek to other languages and eventually to English. Translation is inherently an inexact process, and shades of meaning are coloured by the limitation of the languages themselves and the inherent humanness of linguists doing the work. Further to all that, though, is the transcription of any work from one medium to another necessitates a certain amount of liberty be given moving between the two. There’s a certain interpretative discernment in deciding how to transpose art between mediums which is why a dozen composers could attempt to transcribe a musical performance and all end up with a slightly different score. No author writes to the amount of audio visual detail a film could capture because it would render itself unreadable. And yet, if film were to portray everything exactly as written, with all the nuances explicit stated out and the vivid audio visuals stripped away it would become unwatchable. So, a movie about a centuries old poem written in another language is never going to be “accurate” because such as state cannot exist.

Which is to say, what would “historically accurate” even really look like for the Odyssey anyhow? Not a lot is actually known about Homer as an author. Many of the characters, including all of the monsters, are completely made up. And, most importantly, ancient Greece wasn’t nearly as white as all those bleached statues the right wing American conservative Republicans have come to believe. In all likelihood whatever Musk’s xAI churns out as so-called “historically accurate” will be even less realistic than Washington Iriving’s “A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus.” Then again, we all know how much the American conservative LOVES to cling to that ball of yarn, so why should their idea that the Achaeans (Argives / Danaans), Trojans, Cicones, Lotophagoi, Phaeacians, and others not be some kind of titled reflection of the Confederately lookin white folk they are.

Ovi Watch: 30×20

While the 2025-2026 Washington Capitals season has not been nearly the blustery excitement of last year, and Ovi has not continued the voracious goal scoring tear that has defined most of his career, there have still been some shining moments to celebrate.

Typically, I’ve cataloged many of them on this blog over the years, as they’ve happened, but just like Ovi, I’ve slowed down a little recently on tallying them up even if I’m still celebrating each one with the same kind of joyous smile I always have.

In a 6-4 wing against the Philadelphia Flyers, Ovi reached the 30 goal milestone for an NHL-record 20th time with tallies #30 and #31 during the game. This is how the record fares against the history of 30 goal seasons:

1 player, Ovechkin, has reached 20 seasons of 30 or more goals all time
3 players, Ovi, Gartner (17), and Jagr (15), have reached 15 or more seasons of 30 or more goals
29 players have reached 10 or more seasons of 30 goals or more
167 players have reached 5 or more seasons of 30 goals or more
428 players have achieved at least 2 seasons of 30 or goals or more

Consistency is the key for Ovechkin as the historical view demonstrates as you drill down further.

With a career more than double the length of Bossy, those two are the only one’s who’s 30 goal output represents more than 90% of their careers, joined Garnter and Bobby Hull as the only ones to achieve it over 80% of the time.

100% or 10 of 10 seasons, Mike Bossy
95.24% or 20 of 21 so far, Ovechkin
89.47% or 17 of 19, Mike Gartner

0.16% 1 of 626 goal scorers 2012-13, defined by Ovi’s league leading 32 during the lockout shortened season

Comparatively, the second most proficient 30 goal season scorer, Mike Gartner, comes from the era just before Ovechkin, where (excluding one anomalous shortened seasons), on average 51 players or 9.75% of goal scorers achieved 30 or more goals per season.

15.4% 75 of 487 goal scorers in 1981-82, in Gartner’s 35, T40

0.729% or 4 of 549 goal scorers in 1994-95, which was Gartner second miss during the lockout shortened season with 12, T85

Needless to say, the two era’s are difficult to compare. 11 of Gartner’s 19 seasons 10% or more of the goal scorers reached the 30-goal threshold, while this never happened during Ovi’s career. Garner’s era average of 9.75% of players reaching the 30-goal threshold is 49% higher than the single best season of 6.54% during Ovi’s era. 11 of Gartner’s 19 seasons 54 or more players reached the 30-goal threshold, which only happened a single time during Ovi’s career, while during Gartner’s era the 51 average was only reached twice during Ovi’s.

Ovi has been been far-and-away the most consistent 30-goal scorer for the franchise during his tenure with the team, were in 15 of 19 seasons he was the sole 30 goal (or more) producer on the team

13.04% or 3 of 23 goal scorers in 2024-25, including Ovi’s team leading 44

14.61% or 32 of 219 team goals in 2010-11
14.35% or 31 of 216 team goals in 2023-24
12.64% or 33 of 261 team goals in 2016-17

The one exception was the 2020-21 shortened season
0% of the 22 goal scorers reached the mark, Ovi was one of 2 players to breach the 20 goal mark, with 24
12.77% or 24 of 188 team goals, representing Ovi’s only 30 goal season miss

While Gartner might have the second most career 30-goal seasons, he was never relied on by his teams in the same way to be the primary goal scoring threat. Mike Bossy, on the other hand, might have had a substantially shorter career, but was relied on to drive his teams scoring, similar to Washington’s use of Ovi, having reached the 30 goal milestone 100% of the time, better than Gartner’s nearly 90%, in the same era that Gartner played. Here’s how Bossy’s 30 goal seasons played out for the Islanders:

28.57% or 6 of 21 goal scorers in 1977-78, including Bossy’s team leading 53
25% or 5 of 20 goal scorers in 1978-79, including Bossy’s league leading 69
21.74% or 5 out of 23 goal scorers in 1980-81, including Bossy’s league leading 68
20% or 4 out of 20 goal scorers in 1981-82, including Bossy’s team leading 64
13.64% or 3 out of 22 goal scorers in 1982-83, including Bossy’s team leading 60
11.53% or 3 of 26 goal scorers in 1984-85, including Bossy’s team leading 58
10.71% or 3 of 28 goal scorers in 1985-86, including Bossy’s team leading 61
9.09% or 2 of 22 goal scorers in 1983-84, including Bossy’s team leading 51
8.33% or 2 of 24 goal scorers in 1979-80, including Bossy’s team leading 51
8.33% or 2 of 24 goal scorers 1986-87, including Bossy’s team lead tying 38

Bossy was never the sole 30 goal scorer for his team during his career, and was one of five 30 goal scorers on the team 3 times. Comparatively, Ovi shared the milestone with at least 3 other players 4 of 19 seasons, while Bossy had that honor during 6 of his 10.

19.87% or 60 of 302 team goals in 1982-83
19.27% or 69 of 358 team goals in 1978-79
19.15% or 68 of 355 team goals in 1980-81
18.65% or 61 of 327 team goals in 1985-86
18.15% or 51 of 281 team goals in 1979-80
16.88% or 64 of 385 team goals in 1981-82
16.81% or 58 of 345 team goals in 1984-85
15.87% or 53 of 334 team goals in 1977-78
14.28% or 51 of 357 team goals in 1983-84
13.62% or 38 of 279 team goals in 1986-87

Bossy never reached the 20% mark for team scoring in his career, although he came close 3 times breaching 19%, Ovi broke 19% of team scoring 10 different seasons in total, carrying the team with his scoring at a much higher rate in an era with lower scoring overall than what Bossy was tasked with.

In addition to the Ovechkin extending is 30-goal season record, he also managed to extend some other records as well:

928 All Situations Goals Regular Season, #1 All Time, +34 Wayne Gretzky 894
141 Game Winning Goals Regular Season, #1 All Time, +6 Jaromir Jagr 135
7080 Shots on goal Regular Season, #1 All Time, +871 Ray Borque 6209

And added to his stats on:

I’ve always had a bit of a mixed feeling doing shows like #WHMPH Great music shouldn’t have come down to showcasing it based on ethnicity, gender, religion or other marginalized status and generally on MPH noise radio the musical tapestry is agnostic. However, to pretend all musicians were (or even still are) treated equally seems narrow-mindedly privileged. Therefor, in celebration of Women’s History Month we’ll talk about advancing equality, visibility and opportunities for women in the music industry through the work of http://www.womeninmusic.org
