Characters

characters traveller
The Traveller

The Traveller is lone antiquarian in the classic Lovecraftian mould. He visits the town on the advice of others and spends an afternoon amid the sea haze gazing at the architecture while trying to avoid the locals. His plans to leave at sunset don’t really work out and he’s forced to stay at a shabby guest house. And that’s where the fun begins…

The Observer

We don’t really know much about the Observer at the moment, but he’s clearly interested in the Traveller’s journey to Innsmouth.

characters jo
Joe Sargent
Joe is the gruff driver of the Innsmouth bus. He sits in silence as he brings the Traveller into town. Later he’s the bearer of bad news (which may or may not be true… no, let’s face it, it’s not true).

characters clerk
The Clerk

The Clerk works at the aforementioned guest house. He’s entirely mute in this version of the story as he checks the Traveller in and leads him up to the attic room.

characters copy
Zadok Allen

Zadok is a drunken wreck by the time this story takes place. He wasn’t always that way though. We know from Lovecraft’s original tale that he has lived in Innsmouth all of his life and is well aware of the mysterious goings-on there. For whatever reason the locals tolerate him. Probably because no one would believe the improbable tales of what he’s seen.

Eleanor Waite
‘Elle’ and her twin brother Alfred are the children of a former Innsmouth resident Degory Waite, part of the Innsmouth Waite clan. They are both impressed by a shadowy wing of the American government as part of the plan to provoke the residents of Innsmouth into open revolt. Surly and deadpan, she is far more proactive than her brother.

characters copy
Alfred Waite
Elle’s twin brother, Alfred is far more hesitant than his sister. Shy and academic, he is a reluctant protagonist true to the Lovecraftian archetype.

characters copy
Marty Pollux
Marty and his twin William are more victims of the American government. Far more outgoing than his brother, Marty is a family man who has lost his daughter in circumstances which are, as yet, unclear.

characters copy
William Pollux
Marty’s twin brother is a quieter character who takes even less kindly to being manipulated by government spooks. He is a large man brimming with rage which he only manages to control with some effort.

characters copy
Obed Marsh
Obed is a character who appears in the original story by HP Lovecraft. He is the nominal leader of the corrupted residents of Innsmouth and the one who made their pact with the fishy Deep Ones. While grotesque hybrid of fish and man in appearance, he is articulate and eloquent in speech and commands the respect and fanatical loyalty of his fellow townsfolk.

characters copy
Jonah
Jonah is one of Innsmouth’s corrupted residents under the thrall of Obed. He is only a bit-part character in Issue 1 but will go on to play a pivotal role in the events that unfold.

characters copy
Howard and Elmer
These two agents of the American government are the brains behind the master plan to eradicate Innsmouth and its corrupted elements. Howard embodies the right wing attitudes of the day while his colleague is quieter and more contemplative.

characters copy
Degory Waite
Degory appears only in flashback. He is father to the twins Elle and Alfred and is certainly the influence behind Elle’s independent thinking. He openly disagrees with Obed and, when we last see him, is plotting his exit from the increasingly corrupted town of Innsmouth.
