Eastern Front 1945

We played a late war eastern front clash recently.  Russians versus Germans in the dying days of the third reich.

The game was played using the Battlegroup rules from Iron Fist.  This is probably larger than most Battlegroup games but the rules scale up quite well.

The Soviets were closing in from two directions to capture a bridge needed for their advance while the isolated German defenders clung on in desperation.

The terrain was heavily urbanised with ruined factories and administrative buildings most common. Break points were divided between the two Soviet forces but combined for the Germans.  We had two players on each side.

On the south bank attack the Soviets has a mix of regualr infantry, engineers and some inexperienced naval troops.  They were backed up with an SU bunker-buster tank.

To the north of the bridge a second force of Russian infantry, scouts, mobile artillery and some cavalry aim to link up with their comrades in the southern attack and secure the crossing point.

Traditional mounted cavalry versus machineguns is a brave tactic but ultimately there is reason it's rarely seen in WW2.

Fighting was at close quarters with the Soviets picking their way through booby-trapped buildings and viscious ambushes.

House to house fighting was the order of the day.

The SU Bunker Buster ran over a mine and proved a damp squib  after looking so threatening.

These guys were prepared but probably releived it wasn't down to them to knock it out.

A close of play the Germans had been pushed back but still held the bridge with their numbers  dwindling fast.

The sailors had done surprisingly well.

The Soviet engineers bring up a flame thrower to burn out the remaining Germans.

Lots of fun and a first outing for Paul's new sarissa ruined factories and the Soviet sailors I painted.

Soviet Naval Troops

All the nice girls love a sailor, so here are some WW2 Soviet naval troops I've just finished.

Four squads of eight men (3 x smg, 4 x rifle, 1 lmg) as the rank and file of the platoon.

The Command team

For support these soviet sailors have a maxim mg, an anti-tank rifle team and a sniper team.

Last is an assault squad lead by a junior officer, perhaps a political officer to bolster their morale.

They are mostly Warlord figures with some extras from Black Tree and Artizan Designs and intended for use in our Battlegroup games.  There are some boats to come when I get around to them.

6mm Cold War

We played a Cold War game this week.  The Warsaw Pact, all Russians in this game, advance against a mixed force of NATO defenders (Belgians, Brits and West Germans).

All of us were old enough to remember when this was ultra modern.  The miniatures are Heroics and Ros 6mm.  I think many are of a similar vintage to us and if I'm right they have held up remarkably well for their age.  Better than me anyway.

For rules we used A Fistful of Tows 3.  These rules are platoon based, so a vehicle model represents 3-4 real vehicles.  This allows a lot more of the the rear echelon kit to make it on to the table.

We used cm for measurement but this made ranges and movement very small and maybe inches would be better,

After Lockdown

Here are some photos of a Battlegroup 28mm WW2 game we played last week. 1944 Eastern Front.

On the right a Russian armoured column and tank riders flanks the town, liberating the former factory manager's residence in the process.

A viscious tank fight leaves many burning wrecks on both sides but a well timed Shturmovik flypast knocks out a Panzer IV and the defences crumble.

Meanwhile the Russian infantry push into the town encountering stiff German resistance as an armoured Kampfgruppe rushes to stop them.

Where the #@*$ did that Panther come from!

More Germans are sent to shore up the line but their morale is close to collapsing.

The Soviet and Fascist infantry engage in furious street fighting for the ruined factory.

The game was played using the Battlegroup WW2 rules.  I think they give a pretty good game.  I'm wondering if they would work for my RCW figures.  Not having to learn too many rule sets is always helpful.

These rules are popular the the club.  This is the table my Club mates Ian and Matt set up for a Normandy game in another corner of the club.
