The Scum and Villains of X-wing's New Faction

 By CaulynDarr

I totally phone it in when I work for the Empire.

I've had a few games with the new faction.  The new ships are pretty fun, and they've rekindled my interest in the game after a few months of disinterest.  Phantoms and fat turret ships where dominating the game, and I prefer Rebel jousters.  It was a good time for a dedicated spoiler faction to shake up the meta.

X-Wing Top Gun: How to stay with your wing-man.

by CaulynDarr
No, sorry, this isn't a Top Gun based conversion of the X-Wing rules.  Though, now that I think about it, that should be a thing.
In a given game of X-wing, you are only probably going to make 12-20 attack rolls and get usually as many actions.  Missing out on either a single attack or action can have a large impact on the results of a game.  Too many collisions and being out of arc too often can lead to a loss much quicker than any string of bad rolls.  If you have good spacial visualization abilities you can often fly you ships by the seat-of-your-pants, but it doesn't hurt to know a few tips and tricks to predict exactly where your ships will end up after a maneuver.

Becoming a better 40k general tactical #1-Winning the pre-game

By Spaguatyrine

With 6th edition comes a new phase of 40K. I call this the pregame phase.
There are often anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes of pregame warmups before turn one even starts. In my opinion, whether you win or lose will often be determined by the pregame phase and deployment. I will even be brash enough to say more than 50% of games are won in this critical first 15 to 30 minutes.

Board Control; Mobility vs Durability

By TheGraveMind

You'll hear people say "Play the mission", but what does it mean? It means that 5 of the 6 missions are objective based and while it is fun to just kill everything you can, you need to be able to get to those objectives when the time comes. Generally an army isn't designed to do something like just kill everything, it will use some board control as well. While killing stuff naturally gives some control of the board, actually making the effort to get the upper hand can win the game. Generally this is done by two means, mobility or durability.

Ymgarl genestealers

By TheGravemind

So 6th edition changes have taken a bit of getting used to, but armies adapt. For Tyranids, Hiveguard used to be the staple of the elite slot. Now with the decline of mech that is changing. I've been replacing my hiveguard units with ymgarl squads. They are the new amazing unit this edition in my opinion. I want to talk about how I've been using them.

Re-Post: Sun Tsu And The Art Of Stupid

by SandWyrm

(sigh...) I suppose the 11-month reprieve in Sun Tsu quoting 'tactics' articles out in the blog-o-sphere was too good to last. With the general downturn in 40K morale/interest pre-6th, the stupid is starting to surface again. This time in the form of an article on Fantasy. Next we'll start seeing meaningless lateral-thinking articles. Oh wait, that's happened too.

Getting Ready To Face The Horde...

by SandWyrm

Hopefully, TheNeverThere has finished assembling his 21 T-34s to a playable state for tonight's game. Here's the 1450-point German Panzerkompanie that I'll be trying to hold them back with.

Guest Post: The Art Of Big Scary Distractions

by NitroKitty

This post evolved out of a discussion on Leman Russ tactics, and why you should drop your sponsons and keep your tanks up front and on the move. SandWyrm has written a great blog on the subject, and after trying it out, I'm a believer. I thought I'd supplement his tactics with a little psychological warfare, or how to make your opponent shoot what you want him to shoot.

Apparently, It's Old Stuff Day... getting shot up and pulling models

by Farmpunk

I turned on the way-back machine, and found this one:

From Feb 19th, 2009...

Getting shot up and pulling models by Farmpunk

So last night we played a team game. SandWyrm (IG) and I (DH) vs. Ross (ork hordes), and a player coming back from 4years of not playing. I think 3rd ed was when he played last. We had to go over a lot of rules. And Argue over wether the Deciever can be included in a lit of 1000pts, and if the Callidus assassin's Word in your ear can affect the C'tan.

Reader Question: Hellhounds?

by SandWyrm

Charles Writes:

I was wondering something, as I have not had any real practice against the Guard Codex, and a friend of mine is looking to make his a little more beefy.
We both had a question based on what do you think of Hellhounds?  We are stuck hunting for a reason not to use them.  As they seem really really good.  If you could give me some insider advice, as it seems to me that you know your way around the Codex.  I would greatly appriciate it.

He has just been having some horrid luck, and needs to get back onto his feet, and get a good list for play.

Tactics and then some

by: Uberdark

So its been a bit since I've written anything, but after playing a few games of late I have really started noticing a lot of ways different people play and how those ways help or hurt their game.  tonight i played a great up and coming painter and gamer who has one of the most beautiful Smurf Marine armies out there, and he's only twelve!!

BMG Tourney: Game Three

by SandWyrm

Now that I'd vanquished both the Nids and the IG with my combination of generalship and high comp scores, I prepared for my third and final game. At this point, I had a perfect 100 points for the first 2 games. So nothing short of a loss by massacre was going to keep me from making the top 3.

BMG Tourney: Game Two

by SandWyrm

In my last post, I described my first BMG tourney game against the new Nids, where their lack of effective (and durable) anti-tank (due to the Comp Rules) hurt them badly, giving me a perfect 50 points for the first battle. Now as I prepared for my second battle, I saw that I'd be facing another Mech IG list. Hmmnnn... I thought. This could be interesting.

COMPetitive Play? Part II

by SandWyrm and Farmpunk

SandWyrm here. So, having already covered the details of the BMG Comp system from the tourney this past weekend, here's how easily a new codex like the IG can get around such systems. (More...)
