Napoleon Versus Gandalf Versus Math (or Why Games Workshop Keeps Failing)

By CaulynDarr

Short Dead Dude

Sandwyrm and I have been using the Nottingham Style as short hand for everything we don't like coming out of, well, the game designers in Nottingham.  After Sandwyrm's recent critique of Gates of Antares and a run through of my copy of Warmaster: Ancients. I think I've finally quantified what it is about these game systems that often leave me unsatisfied.  And it all has to do with History.

Gencon: Privateer Press

by SandWyrm

Third up is Privateer Press. While they didn't have as large a vendor presence as FFG or Battlefront, the quality of their presentation was up to their usual high standard. They even had a new video game to show off. In the gaming halls they also had a good number of miniature and board game events. Not nearly as large as FFG, but larger than anyone else (not counting Magic, of course).

Addiction In Games

by SandWyrm

Various sites are reporting today that Dong Nguyen, the creator of the iOS/Android game "Flappy Bird" has decided to pull his game from both app stores. Reportedly because he felt that the game was "Too Addictive". Not having heard about the game before seeing this news, I did some quick Googling. Which took me to some interesting IGN reviews that question whether this addictive game is actually any good or not. Which got me thinking about addiction in games generally.

Nuclear Launch Detected!!!

by SandWyrm

For those who think that 3D printing will only ever be a rare, expensive, enthusiast thing. Here's your first truly disruptive product. A (cheap to refill) filament printer starting at only $499. It has 0.3mm resolution and can print within a 6" x 6" cube. That's more than fine enough to print out a 40K-scale tank model.

Ensuring Honest Rolling (Or... The Geek That Kicked The Hornets' Nest) - Updated

by SandWyrm

I've just spent most of the day writing up proper dice rules for The M42 Project. Once I'd finished the how-to-roll-2D6 nonsense, I realized that games like 40K, Warpath, and Flames should really include a few pages of rules on what sorts of dice are legal to use in a competitive game. It would solve a lot of problems! So here's my anti-cheating rules. Let me know what you think!

Will Digital Publishing Destroy The Local Game Store?

by SandWyrm

As Privateer Press gears up to release War Room for the iPad this April, with it's integrated rules and army builder; should we be scared of it's effect on the profit margins of the local game store? Digital 3D printing is an obvious future threat (or opportunity) to anyone selling model kits, but are gaming books actually more important to their bottom line?

Guest Post: Why I Love WarMachine

by Rionnay

So I’ve been a 40k player for almost 3 years, not a long time in 40k terms but long enough to say I’ve been around the block. However, recently GW has really been throwing us all curve balls so I began to think outside the box. I started looking for a new game back last September and found Warmachine/Hordes.

Why Not Warmachine?

by SandWyrm

I was reading through VT2's embarrassing rant on 3++ today when I started wondering why I haven't given Warmachine a proper try. I've been trying Kings of War. I've bought into Malifaux (We need to play Uberdark!!!). And yesterday I picked up the rulebook for Flames of War to scratch the itch that World of Tanks has started. At some point Farmpunk and I will try out Warpath. But why not Warmachine?

That Other Company's Fantasy Wargame...

by SandWyrm

Mrs. Sandwyrm was having a ladies night at the house with some church friends, so after hitting Chick-Fil-A, I decided to take the kids down to the North Store. Their 40K shipment usually comes in on Thursday and I wanted to snag some new Speeders for the Emo-Wing.
