Effectiveness of fly ash as a stabilising agent for heavy metals leaching was studied for differe... more Effectiveness of fly ash as a stabilising agent for heavy metals leaching was studied for different ratios of sewage sludge (SS)-fly ash (FA) mixtures at different pH and washing conditions. The supernatant liquid was analysed for total coliforms. The results obtained from the microbiological analysis of 1:1, 4:1, 1:4 sewage sludge and fly ash ratios showed that the initial concentration of total coliforms was 2.4 × 10 4 MPN/100ml, 150 MPN/100ml and 120 MPN/100ml which were finally reduced to 28, 4 and 3 with successive washings. The leachate after shaking of the SS:FA mixture were analysed for heavy metals contents and the results showed that the maximum removal of heavy metals was achieved with SS/FA (1:1) mixture, while Co was absent in all the samples. Out of the three pH conditions (5, 6, 7), it was observed that the maximum removal of different heavy metals was achieved at the lower pH (5) conditions.

Ozone and particulate matter (PM), PM 10 and PM 2.5 , were monitored along with meteorological pa... more Ozone and particulate matter (PM), PM 10 and PM 2.5 , were monitored along with meteorological parameters at a semi-urban location, Patiala, in the northwestern Indo-Gangetic plain from December 2013 to November 2014. The annual mean concentration levels of PM 10 , PM 2.5 and ozone were recorded as 178 μg m −3 , 88 μg m −3 and 39 ppb, which also exceeded the national standards on a 24-h average basis, by 77.3% (335 days), 53.2% (338 days) and 20 days, respectively. High levels of PM (PM 10 and PM 2.5) were observed in winter (58-381 and 42-270 μg m −3) and in the post-monsoon (71-320 and 39-320 μg m −3) season and a rise in the level of ozone was observed in summer (22-72 ppb) and in the post-monsoon season (23-73 ppb), respectively. The rate of ozone production was the highest during the post-harvest fire period (3.94 ppb O 3 /h in May and 4.23 ppb O 3 /h in November). A Pearson correlation study showed the strong dependency of PM and ozone on meteorological variables. Relative humidity has the highest ranking for ozone and PM 10 , while wind speed has the lowest rank for ozone, PM 10 and PM 2.5 in the order of factors affecting the level of pollutants. The generalised linear model and the neural network model (for ozone) and the random forest model (for PM) outperformed on the basis of performance indices and further cross-validation was done.

Two receptor molecules N-(2-nitrophenyl)benzene-1,2-diamine (DPA) and N,N-bis(2nitrophenyl)benzen... more Two receptor molecules N-(2-nitrophenyl)benzene-1,2-diamine (DPA) and N,N-bis(2nitrophenyl)benzene-1,2-diamine (TPA) are proposed as Zn 2+ and Ni 2+-selective electrodes, respectively. The two electrodes respond to Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ ions with the detection limits of 1.3 × 10 −6 M and 2.8 × 10 −6 M, respectively. Both the electrodes have a life time of four months and respond within 15 s and 20 s, respectively, for Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ over a wide pH range (3-9). The electrodes show very good selectivity towards the primary ions in presence of some alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metal ions.

The electrode shows reproducible and Nernstian behavior for yttrium ions in the oncentration range 10-4M to 10-1M with an RSD of 2%. The electrode does not show any change in response within a pH range of 5-9. The effect of internal solution concentration on the calibration curve was also studied. The electrode performance was also studied in partially non-aqueous medium (5% - 20%) of acetone and ethanol. The system was used successfully as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of yttrium ions with EDTA.

Herein, a potent electrochemical ionophore (SMS-2) based on a Schiff base has been used for the m... more Herein, a potent electrochemical ionophore (SMS-2) based on a Schiff base has been used for the modification of a screen-printed electrode (SPE). The modified disposable electrode can selectively detect ferric ions in an aqueous medium. Redox behavior of the proposed strip was characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Incorporation of the ligand in the ink of the SPE enhanced the analytical performance of the electrode, and its surface modification was confirmed by SEM and EDX analysis. Shifting/quenching of the cathodic peak potential of the ionophore after binding with Fe(iii) ions was used to detect and measure the ferric ion concentration. This sensor can identify Fe(iii) in the detection range from 0.625 μM to 7.5 μM. The modified SPE can selectively detect ferric ions in the presence of many other interfering ions and has been successfully used to determine the Fe(iii) content in blood serum samples.
