The ISO 2859 standard (derived from MIL-STD 105 E) defines an "inspection" as an "activity such as measuring, examining, testing or gauging one or more characteristics of a product or service, and comparing the results with specified requirements in order to establish whether conformity is achieved for each characteristic" 1 . It is needed to ensure that parts conform to specifications and customer requirements. The data recorded during inspection is analyzed by quality control management to check if there's a need for adjustments in the production process to reduce defects or improve a specific process in the production line. Without it, a plant will likely fail to meet customer requirements which will eventually lead to bankruptcy.
