Wednesday Reading Week 14

Links go to goodreads:

What I've been reading

K.J. Charles: The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal.
I'm not sure why I finished this book, I was slightly bored by it.

A lot of fanfiction, mostly comfort reading. A lot of Check Please! fanfiction.

What I'm reading now:

C.S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Still. I don't have the brainspace to let myself really read.

Except fanfiction, I'm reading a lot of fanfiction.

What will I read next:

No idea. Except fanfiction.

Wednesday Reading Week 6

Links go to goodreads:

What I've been reading

Aliette de Bodard: In the Vanishers’ Palace.
This was disturbing and unsettling, however the story was not without hope. I loved all the characters, and their relationships. Highly recommended.

Makihirochi: Is Kichijoji the Only Place to Live? Vol. 2.
I really love this manga. I like the characters, and so far I haven't gotten bored with it. I love the way food is depicted, as something lustful and not shame-inducing.

Hebi-Zou, Tsuta Suzuki, Tarako (Illustrator): Heaven's Design Team Vol. 1.
This was funny and entertaining, even though I'm a little worried it might get repetitive. However, I like it enough to want to buy more volumes.

Chie Shinkyu: Wakako Zake, Vol. 1.
This was so entertaining, I love food manga. However, for those that are not interested in slice-of-life and food this wouldn't probably the manga. I will definitely buy more volumes when they come out.

What I'm reading now:

C.S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Still. I don't have the brainspace to let myself really read.

What will I read next:

Probably Katherine Arden's The Bear and the Nightingale.

Wednesday Reading Week 3

Links go to goodreads:

What I've been reading so far this year

Stephanie Burgis: The Art of Deception.
I loved the books I've read by Burgis so far, and this short story is no exeption. This could really have been longer though, or there should be a sequel. I want to know more about the characters and their world.

Robin Stevens: Jolly Foul Play (Murder Most Unladylike Mysteries #4).
I love this series. I love Hazel even though Daisy rubs me a little the wrong way. I'm not entirely sure why, perhaps because I rather like more empathetic characters.
I liked this book a little better than the third one. The description of the school and its students ring very much true. Even though I didn't go to school in the 30s, am not from England, and didn't go to boarding school, I did go to an all-girls school. So even through the differences this is entirely relatable to me. So looking forward to read the next book.

Martha Wells: Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries #2).
I love Murderbot, like the plot and the worldbuilding. However, I can never quite connect to the other characters. I'm not entirely sure why. It doesn't matter though, I will read the other two novellas and the novel when it comes out. I really want to know more about Murderbot.

C.B. Lee: Not Your Sidekick (Sidekick Squad #1).
I liked this book. I really liked Jess and could relate to her. I love the way the relationships are depicted: Jess and her friends, Jess and her family. It rings very true to me. I'm interested in the plot and where it will go, and I will get the sequels.
However, it still feels only ok to me, but perhaps I just wasn't in the mood for superheroes.

Richard Blanco: The Prince of Los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood.
This was my favourite book so far this year. I don't have the words why it just grabbed me so, and I will probably write a proper review for it.

What I'm reading now:

Aliette de Bodard: In the Vanishers’ Palace.
This is disturbing, but so good. Love Yên so far, she's such a great character.

C.S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
I want to re-read the Chronicles of Narnia. To be frank, I'm kinda bored with this, so I'm reading bit by bit.

What will I read next:

I'm not quite sure yet, but I have more than enough on my TBR...

Wednesday Reading: week 05 and 06.

The rather short edition...

What I have finished reading:

Tuula Karjalainen: Tove Jansson. Die Biographie (Tove Jansson. The Biography) [Tove Jansson, Tee työtä ja rakasta]
I really enjoyed this biography. I love the Moomins, and I wanted to know more about their author. I also enjoyed other books by her.

Hermione Ranfurly: To War with Whitaker: Wartime Diaries of the Countess of Ranfurly, 1939-45
I don't know where I've read about this book, but I'm glad I did. It was a really interesting account.

Shannon Hale: Ever After High (1). Die Schule der Herzenswünsche [Ever After High: The Storybook of Legends]
While interesting enough that I've finished it and even though I'm curious how it may continue, I won't read more of this series. I might read summaries of it though.

Kyousuke Motomi: QQ Sweeper [QQ Sweeper], Vol. 2
I really liked this volume. I like both main characters and their interaction.

Mika Yamamori: Daytime Shooting Star [Hirunaka no Ryuusei (ひるなかの流星)], Vol. 12
I'm so glad this series ended as it did. I really want to re-read it know.

What I’m reading now:

Terry Pratchett: Soul Music
I'm not far in, but so far I really like Susan.

What I’m going to read next:

Probably Jacqueline Kelly: Calpurnias faszinierende Forschungen [The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate]. I loved the first book.

Wednesday Reading: week 03 and 04.

What I have finished reading:

Akiko Morishima: Highschool GIrls [半熟女子 1 Hanjuku Joshi], Vol. 2
More of the same. It's cute though, and liked that they didn't draw out the drama. There's even a touch realism here.

Kyousuke Motomi: QQ Sweeper [QQ Sweeper], Vol. 1
This is by the author of Dengeki Daisy (which I still have to read). I liked it. It's about a girl, Fumi, who's without money spending the night at the old school house. She meets her classmate Kyutaro. It turns out he cleans people's souldreams from waste and critters. And Fumi has the ability to help him.
It's pretty standard shoujo fare, but I like the characters. I really like Fumi's shamelessness in her goal to catch a rich husband. And I like how she grows over the course of this volume. I think it's only three volumes, so I'm going the read them too.

Yamazaki, Kore: Die Braut des Magiers (The Mage’s Bride) [Mahou Tsukai no Yome], Vol. 2
This is so cool. I really like Chise's growth over the course of this volume. We learn slowly more about Elias and about this world. Even though Chise had a pretty bad childhood, she still knows how to be kind. She's a little passive sometimes, but she does stand up for herself and for others. And while her decision to stay with Elias may not be the healthiest, she makes it for herself.

Kanna Kii: Ein Fremder am Stand [Umibe no Etranger]
I liked this volume. And I really loved the art. There's a sequel series which will come out later this year. I'll probably pick this one up.

Saki Aida & Yuh Takashina: Deadlock, Vol. 1
This volume of yaoi is less hardcore than it could be, certainly less graphic. I still liked these characters, and I'm curious how it will continue. I'm glad I waited with reading this volume, the next will come out next month, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Kozue Amano: Aqua [Aqua], Vol. 1
This one was a re-read. I just love the genleness of this manga, and while the characters are a little stereotypical, they are really likeable. It's good to relax with this one before bed. I love the art, so detailed and interesting. It's truly a place I wish I could visit.

Genevieve Cogman: The Invisible Library
I liked this one. It wasn't overwhelming, but good entertainment. I liked the characters, especially Irene. It's great to see a female character, who puts her duty first.
And I liked the world created. I think I'll read the next volume too.

What I’m reading now:

Tuula Karjalainer: Tove Jansson. Die Biographie (Tove Jansson. The Biography) [Tove Jansson, Tee työtä ja rakasta]
I've finished the first chapter! I just seem unable to concentrate on it, even though it's interesting.

What I’m going to read next:

Not sure yet.

Wednesday Reading: week 02.

What I have finished reading:

Hikaru Nakamura: Saint Young Men [ 聖(セイント)☆おにいさん, Seinto Oniisan), Vol. 4
I enjoy reading these manga, but I don't have much to say about them.

Robin McKinley: The Blue Sword
There were a few things that annoyed me about this book, but I went really fast through it. I like Harry. And I liked that there were a few women beside her.

Tove Jansson: Die Tochter des Bildhauers (Sculptor’s Daughter: A Childhood Memoir) [Bildhuggarens dotter]
This wennt really fast too. I like the way she writes. It's both poetic but also grounded in reality.

Gail Carson Levine: The Tale of Two Castles
I didn't have a book with me, when I went to work, so I read this one I've had on my reader. I really liked Elodie. She is kind, and bright, and takes care of herself. She also learns and grows. I also liked the mystery, and all the other characters.

Luisa Velontrova: Martillo's Mysterious Books
This is a German manga. It's about a girl, Shai, whose father own a bookshop for magical books. One day the diary of the shop apprentice's grandfather gets stolen. Shai goes looking for it. It reads fast, and I liked the characters, even the anagonists. It's very charming, and I would have loved to read more of it.

Akiko Morishima: Highschool Girls [半熟女子 1 Hanjuku Joshi], Vol. 1
This yuri manga read very fast. While I liked the art, there's not much substance to the story, but then I didn't expect that. The characters are relatable but predictable. I will however read the second volume.

Mari Yamazaki: PIL [PIL]
Nanami loves british punk and she longs to visit England. She lives with her grandfather who has lived there. I loved this coming-of-age story. Nanami is strong, and willful, and kind, and vulnerable, and very, very relatable. Her grandfather is kind and cares for her, but he's also got faults and can't keep a hold on the money. I like their relationship. I would love to read by this author.

What I’m reading now:

Tuula Karjalainer: Tove Jansson. Die Biographie (Tove Jansson. The Biography) [Tove Jansson, Tee työtä ja rakasta]
I wish I've had this as an e-book. In the evening I'm often a little tired, and this would be better be read on the train. But I like ti so far.

What I’m going to read next:

Not sure yet.

Wednesday Reading: week 01.

What I have finished reading:

Terry Pratchett: Small Gods
I've finally finished reading this last year. Once I got into it again, it went by really fast. I liked Brutha, and how he developed as a character, and I like Om. Still, I need to think a little more on this.

Terry Pratchett: Men at Arms
This one however went much faster. I love Sam Vimes, and Angua, and Carrot, and Vetinari, and I liked the mystery.

Hikaru Nakamura: Saint Young Men [</i> 聖☆おにいさん, Seinto Oniisan</i>], Vol. 3
This is a slice-of-life comedy manga, in which Buddha und Jesus go on vacation in Japan. It's very funny, but it never feels disrespectful. I like their friendship, and all the things I learn.

What I'm reading now:

Hikaru Nakamura: Saint Young Men [</i> 聖☆おにいさん, Seinto Oniisan</i>], Vol. 4
More of the same. Since I love the same, this is awesome. I space the chapters out a little though.

Robin McKinley: The Blue Sword
I can see things that might annoy in any other novel, but I love Harry, and I really want to know more. It's a very fast read.

Tuula Karjalainer: Tove Jansson. Die Biographie (Tove Jansson. The Biography) [Tove Jansson, Tee työtä ja rakasta]
It started really interesting, but then I got swept away by "The Blue Swords". Still, when I've finished that I'll return to it.

What I’m going to read next:

Tove Jansson: Die Tochter des Bildhauers (Sculptor's Daughter: A Childhood Memoir) [Bildhuggarens dotter]
Since I'll need a lighter book to read for the way to work, I'll probabyl take this one.

Wednesday Reading: week 47.

What I have finished reading:

Christie, Agatha: Murder on the Orient Express
I wasn't really that surprised by the ending, I think I read about it somewhen before. I was a little surprised though that they let them go. I would have probably done the same, but still, it was a little startling.

Yamazaki, Kore: Die Braut des Magiers (The Mage's Bride) [Mahou Tsukai no Yome], Vol. 1
I really enjoyed this manga. The mage buys Chise at an auction, and it could have been a lot creepy. This manga manages to avoid it, to the most part because of Chise. She is awesome. I'm really looking forward to the next volumes.

What I’m reading now:

Terry Pratchett: Small Gods
Still. I haven’t got much further since last week. I want to finish it this year though.

Lagerlöf, Selma: Nils Holgerssons wunderbare Reise durch Schweden (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils) [Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige]
This is really interesting. I like the stories, and even though I know how it ends I enjoy reading it

What I’m going to read next:

Probably: Sara Lövestan, Herz aus Jazz (Heart made of Jazz) [Hjärta av jazz]. There's been an interesting review, so when I saw it at the library I picked it up.

Wednesday Reading: week 46.

What I have finished reading:

Terry Pratchett: Lords and Ladies
I really loved this book. I think one can see one of Pratchetts theme so clearly here: stories. Stories, we tell ourselves. I saw it clearly in Magrat.

What I’m reading now:

Terry Pratchett: Small Gods
Still. I haven't got much further since last week though.

Lagerlöf, Selma: Nils Holgerssons wunderbare Reise durch Schweden (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils) [Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige]
This is a new translation into German. It's a beautiful edition, but at 700 pages very heavy. I'm not really far in, but I like it so far.

Christie, Agatha: Murder on the Orient Express
Since Nils Holgersson is so heavy, I picked this one as my travel book. It's easy to read, but not very exciting. It's always with me like this with Christie. Perhaps I'm a bit jaded. I wonder whether it was more unique when it was printed. So many tropes have been taken from her.

What I’m going to read next:

I'm not sure yet, I really want to finish the books I'm reading first before I even think of starting a new one.

Wednesday Reading: week 45.

What I have finished reading:

Louisa May Alcott: Eight Cousins
I kind of liked it. There were some interesting ideas, but Rose fell a little flat for me. And all the other characters aren't really fleshed out either. I'll still read Rose in Bloom sometime.

Bee Wilson: Consider the Fork. A History of Invention in the Kitchen
This is a book that would have worked better for me had I spread out the reading a little. It's not that it's too dense, even though there was a lot of information, but that I would have thought about it a little more in-depth. I loved reading about the cultural history about the differet kitchen stuff.

Else Ury: Nesthäkchen and the World War
The Nesthäkchen series spans ten books. It's the life story of Annemarie Braun, the Nesthäkchen (that is the youngest child of a family) of a well-to-do upper middle class family. I've read nine of them when I was a child. This volume was out of print. It deals with World War I. And it's startling to read the rather intense favor for it. It was interesting for its historic value, but otherwise I was glad it was rather short, since I couldn't bring myself to like it.

Dorothy L. Sayers: Clouds of Witness
This is one is a weird one for me. It never really managed to grab me, nevertheless do I want to read the following novels. I liked the ending quite a bit.

Gertrude Chandler Warner: The Boxcar Children
I'm not quite sure why I decided to read this one. And to be frank, it is rather forgettable to me. It isn't bad, I might just have read too many such stories as a child for me to grab it.

Hadumod Bußmann: "Ich habe mich vor nichts im Leben gefürchtet". Die ungewöhnliche Geschichte der Therese Prinzessin von Bayern ("I have feared nothing in life". The unusual life history of Therese Princess of Bavaria)
I've picked it up again when I was in a hurry to catch my train and needed something to read, and read the last third straight through. Therese's such an interesting character, and it was fascinating to read about her life. The little print still annoyed me, but it was well enough to read during daylight.

What I’m reading now:

Terry Pratchett: Small Gods
I've got stuck some-where, but I plan to pick it up again when I've finished Lords and Ladies

Terry Pratchett: Lords and Ladies
Oh, I like this one much better than Small Gods. I love the witches. And I really love the way this books deals with myths.

What I’m going to read next:
Not sure yet.
