Are you ready for JavaOne? And JavaOne @ Embedded? 6 more days …

JavaOne is only 6 days away… Are you ready?
Man, what a crazy couple of weeks it has been. Haven’t blogged for ages. Insanely busy with preparations for JavaOne, Java Embedded @ JavaOne, and some new products we’re working on (on the latter, stay tuned …).
There is so much activity, information, and data around JavaOne to choose from – it’s hard to stay on top of it all. I’ll try to keep it short and provide the highlights as well as my embedded point of view. Ok, here it goes:
First, in case you may not know, there are actually two (!) Java conferences this year: JavaOne itself, and Java Embedded @ JavaOne.
- JavaOne happens from Sep 30 through Oct 4 (yes, that means keynotes are on Sunday! Don’t miss them)
- Java Embedded @ JavaOne happens Oct 3 and 4 – in parallel to JavaOne

Henrik Stahl, Senior Director of Product Management, does a great job of introducing Java Embedded @ JavaOne.
Finally, if you have more questions, check out my FAQ on the Java Embedded @ JavaOne conference.
JavaOne
As every year, JavaOne will be packed with keynotes, technical sessions, BOFs, Hands-On-Labs (HOLs), demo grounds, and events.
New for this year are tutorials, which are a mix between an extended technical session, a BOF, and a HOL. It gives the presenters extra time to show you the ropes on a particular topic and extra time for the attendees to ask questions. But it is less of a ‘lab’ setting compared to a HOL. Should be a good addition to the JavaOne structure.
Also new this year is the Oracle OpenWorld Music Festival, which happens throughout the conference (Sun-Thu) in a couple of venues around the main event area. There is music every day and a great line-up of performers such as Macy Gray, Jimmy Cliff, The English Beat, Joss Stone, and many more. Definitely worth checking out. Of course, there is the traditional assortment of parties and events – just check the JavaOne home page!
In terms of embedded, there will be a HUGE focus on that topic at this year’s JavaOne. Oracle is making a big push for Java in the embedded space, not just by launching the Java Embedded @ JavaOne conference (see above), but embedded is embedded (pun intended!) all throughout JavaOne itself:
- Dozens of dedicated embedded technical sessions, BOFs, tutorials, and Hands-on-Labs – ranging from tiny embedded devices through complex end-to-end embedded solutions and touching on a range of different use cases and markets
- Java in embedded spreads throughout the pavilion and demo boths
- Embedded technology featuring in JavaOne keynotes (very cool – see for yourself!)
- Involvement of partners specializing in embedded solutions built on Java

- JavaOne Conference Preview
- Architects and Architecture at JavaOne
- JavaOne Gangnam Style
- Simon Ritter on JavaOne
- JavaOne Countdown, Are You Ready?
- 25 Reasons to attend JavaOne 2012
- Martin and Lewis at JavaOne 2012?
Ok, that’s it. See you on Sunday in San Francisco!
Cheers,
— Terrence

Olá Brazil! JavaOne Latin America and JUG Events
12/03/2011 in Mobile & Embedded | Tags: event, JavaOne, JavaOne Latin America, JUG | 1 comment
For the next 10 days Java will be all over Brazil … and I don’t mean the black, hot kind 😉
JavaOne Latin America
First, JavaOne Latin America is in Sao Paulo from the 6th to the 8th. Choose from dozens of technical sessions, keynotes, and hands-on labs, explore the booths and DEMOGrounds in the Exhibition Area, and take advantage of the opportunities to speak first-hand with the experts and mingle with your fellow developers.
JavaOne Latin America is organized in four tracks
- Client Side Technologies and Rich User Experiences
- Core Java Platform
- Java EE, Web Profile, Platform Technologies, Web Services, and the Cloud
- Java ME, Mobile, Embedded, and Devices
so there’s bound to be something of interest for everyone. Have a look at the schedule for more information. A full list of sessions can be found here.
JavaOne Latin America is also supported by a number of Java User Groups, so I’m particularly looking forward to the Community Keynote with our well-known Java community members Bruno Souza, Fabiane Nardon, and Vinicus Senger. Should be fun!
Also, there is a Portuguese version of the JavaOne website.
More Java Events
Next, there are a number of additional Java-related events planned, from the SOUJava Geek Bike Ride to a string of JUG events where I and several of my Java Evangelism colleagues will be speaking across Brazil on topics such as Java 7, The Future of Java, Java EE, JavaFX 2.0, and more:
- Dec 4, SOUJava Geek Bike Ride 2011, Sao Paulo
- Dec 9, UAIJUG, Uberlandia (event information)
- Dec 9, CEJUG, Fortaleza/CE
- Dec 10, ALJUG, Maceio/AL (event information to be posted here)
- Dec 11, Javaneiros, Campo Grande/MS
- Dec 12, GOJAVA, Goiania/GO
- Dec 12, GUJAVA, Florianopolis (event information)
- Dec 13, RioJUG, Rio de Janeiro (event information to be posted here)
Be sure to check with your local JUG for specific event information.
Hope to see you in person over the next few days at one of the events!
Cheers,
— Terrence

Java Spotlight Podcast hits 250,000 downloads

Actually, that’s old news – we hit that milestone several weeks ago 😉
The Java Spotlight Podcast has taken off in an astonishing way in less than a year since it was launched – thanks in large part to my tireless partner in crime, Roger Brinkley, who doesn’t waste any chance to snag an interview anytime, anywhere. Beware if you ever happen to find yourself in reach of his microphone 😉
One of my recent personal favorites is episode 51 “Live at JavaOne – Java Platform Timelines and Duke’s Choice Award Winners”. A live audience, a fun mood, and some very cool technologies. Check it out.
While you’re there, browse the list of wide-ranging topics of some of our other episodes, from Java EE, to JavaFX, Java performance, Java ME, cool stuff, and much more.

JavaOne 2011 Report in Japanese

Oracle’s own Yoshio Terada posted his JavaOne summary report to slideshare.net – and has gotten more than 35,000 views in just two days. Looks like it’s a big hit with our Japanese-speaking developers!

New LWUIT tutorial available
10/18/2011 in Mobile & Embedded | Tags: HOL, JavaOne, JavaOne San Francisco, LWUIT, tutorial | Leave a comment
The LWUIT team did a Hands-on-Lab (HOL) at JavaOne – describing step-by-step how to build the “Recipe Book” application.
This HOL is a great tutorial and is now available, like most other JavaOne content, in the JavaOne Content Catalog.
Search for session 24682 and click on the little PDF symbol next to the session. You can download both the entire HOL workbook as well as the slides of the LWUIT 1.5 session.

JavaOne 2011: Keynote videos, Parleys.com, content slides
10/17/2011 in Mobile & Embedded | Tags: content, JavaOne, JavaOne San Francisco, Parleys.com | Leave a comment
If you couldn’t join us in San Francisco last week or you need to catch up with stuff you might have missed (yep, it was a very dense couple of days) … here are some pointers you will appreciate:
- Keynotes: All JavaOne keynotes are available, both in a condensed highlight format as well as the full length versions. Go to the JavaOne Video on Demand page, and click on the video snapshot for the highlights or on the link below the snapshot for the full-length version.
- Parleys: Parleys.com has teamed up with JavaOne to provide JavaOne content on Parleys’ next-gen. eLearning platform. Around 40% of the JavaOne sessions were recorded this way and will, over the next couple of weeks, be made available. The first batches are up and ready for viewing. Check out the JavaOne 2011 Space at parleys.com, or go directly here.
- Content Slides: The slides for most sessions and a number of HOLs and BOFs – including those not recorded for Parleys – are now available via the JavaOne Content Catalog. Find the session, then look for the little PDF symbol to download the slides.
Finally, here is a nice summary of the blogosphere around JavaOne.
Update:
I forgot to add that Tori Wieldt from OTN did a bunch of short (2-5 minutes) live interviews at JavaOne on various topics such as the Duke Choice Award Winners, Mark Reinhold (Chief Architect Java), the Exhibition Hall and Demo Grounds, Java User Groups, Glassfish and Java EE, and much more. It’s a great way to soak up information and get a feel for the vibe of the conference.
Enjoy! Cheers,
— Terrence
