07/12/2011 in Mobile & Embedded | Tags: Java, Java 7, Java SE 7, JDK 7, OpenJDK | Leave a comment
The Java 7 launch happened last Wednesday – by all accounts it was a smashing success.
Attendees and viewers signed up in large numbers, good tweets rolled in, and we’ve heard very positive feedback from developers and partners around the world.
To quote from the main session, Trent Gray-Donald, Technical Lead for the Java 7 work at IBM, says:
“There is a major surge of energy in Java”
If you missed the live event: The Oracle media team worked hard to make the recordings available as soon as possible. All videos are now posted, including the main webcast, 4 technical breakout sessions, and the Q&A/panel discussion:
- Main session, with Adam Messinger (VP of Development Fusion Middleware at Oracle), along with a number of industry and community leaders live from the U.S., Brazil, and the U.K.
- Making Heads and Tails of Project Coin, Small Language Changes in JDK 7, with Joe Darcy
- Divide and Conquer Parallelism with the Fork/Join Framework, with Mark Reinhold
- The New File System API in JDK 7, Staffan Friberg
- A Renaissance VM: One Platform, Many Languages, John Rose
- Meet the Experts: Q&A and Panel Discussion, moderated by Henrik Ståhl
In particular, be sure to watch the “Meet the Experts” session, which covers a number of topics above and beyond the technical breakout sessions.
All videos are available at the Java 7 launch event page.
For a shorter summary webcast on Java 7 you can also check out the OTN video discussion with Adam Messinger, Mark Reinhold, John Rose, and Joe Darcy.
Getting started with Java 7:
The Java 7 Final Release will be available at the end of this month. To get started with the (near-final) Preview Release, check out the Java SE Documentation Home Page (with links downloads and many other resources).

Weekly update: Thomas Kurian, JRockit, JCP.next, Qt, Google cloud strategy, Facebook’s fiasco, SmartCard contest
05/19/2011 in Mobile & Embedded | Tags: Contest, Facebook, Google, Java, Java Card, JCP, JRockit, Nokia, Thomas Kurian | Leave a comment

Lots of news-worthy stuff happening this week. A quick round-up:
- Interview with Thomas Kurian, EVP of Product Development at Oracle (including the Java platform): “For Oracle, Every Revolution is an Evolution”.
- The JRockit JVM license has been updated – JRockit is now free (gratis) for development and internal production use on general purpose computers. See the full text for all details.
- Oracle introduces new Java Specification Requests to evolve Java Community Process (JCP.next JSR 1) towards more transparency and open participation.
- Nokia’s updates to the Qt strategy are causing a lot of confusion among developers.
- An interesting piece on Google’s latest cloud strategy push – just as on of its key cloud services goes down for 48 hours.
- Facebook is committing one PR blunder after another. First, multiple issues with obscure privacy settings, opaque terms-of-use, and questionable services – and now this.
- Finally, if you’re interested in the SmartCard/Java Card space, check out the SIMAGINE awards – a total of of €55000 is up for grabs for the coolest SmardCard applications.

Twitter switches to Java for its search engine
04/11/2011 in Mobile & Embedded | Tags: Java, Ruby-on-Rails, Twitter | Leave a comment
Java scored twice at Twitter over the last few weeks. First, Twitter switched the back-end from MySQL to Lucene (a search engine library written in Java), and then the front-end from Ruby-on-Rails to Blender (a Java server).
The improvements in latency (3x drop) and workload capacity (x10 increase) are quite dramatic. Some quotes:
- “Last week, we launched a replacement for our Ruby-on-Rails front-end: a Java server we call Blender. We are pleased to announce that this change has produced a 3x drop in search latencies and will enable us to rapidly iterate on search features in the coming months.”
- “…our 95th percentile latencies were reduced by 3x from 800ms to 250ms and CPU load on our front-end servers was cut in half. We now have the capacity to serve 10x the number of requests per machine. This means we can support the same number of requests with fewer servers, reducing our front-end service costs by an order-of-magnitude”
- “In the next phase of our deploy, we will eliminate Ruby on Rails entirely, connecting users directly to Blender and potentially reducing latencies even further.”
Technical details on the Twitter engineering blog.
