finally doing better! Also, Sims 3 blather.

So I figured out what part of my recent problem was. Some of it's just depression and I plan on seeing my med doc to see if we need to adjust the meds a little. But part of it was that I'd gotten into this sleep schedule where I was literally sleeping from dawn to twilight. I don't suffer from SAD--Seasonal Affective Disorder--but still, something in my brain says, daylight is when you do things and with no daylight, that's a problem. Also, I was sort of weirdly stressing about Thanksgiving dinner.

the saga of our ThanksgivingCollapse )

In other news, I've been playing Sims 3 a lot lately. It's an excellent time-waster when you don't really feel like doing anything else, although there's some cause and effect where, when you're playing it, you don't feel like doing anything else. Regardless, I've been having fun with it and just started up a Legacy household. I'm not playing by strict Legacy rules because I'm a big fat cheater and while the idea of writing up my Legacy sounds like fun, I don't have the patience to stop and take pictures every five minutes and then edit them in Photoshop and so on the way serious Legacy writers do. Also, Sims fandom is like any other fandom--kinda wanky.

Also, we went out today and bought two Christmas trees, which sounds way more extravagant than it really was. Pics tomorrow, hopefully.

*Does anyone who played The Sims remember the Tragic Clown? You could actually use him to kill people, which I referred to as Death By Clown. It was hilarious, in a sick kind of way.

total lack of motivation...

I've done stuff around the house this week and I did a killer amount of grocery shopping today, but other than that, nothing.

I've read a fair amount--mostly historical stuff about the Deadball Era (pre-1920 baseball)--and played a lot of Sims 3, but I've done no writing at all. Someday I will write my [community profile] intoabar fic, but clearly not in time for tomorrow's deadline. Hopefully I'll feel like writing before the SGA Santa deadline is suddenly staring me in the face.

And I've been kinda mopey. I'm not totally depressed or anything--it's more wanting to curl up with a book and not interact with fandom much. I go through these phases every once in a while, so the one thing I can tell myself is that it will pass. That's a benefit of the meds. Before I was on them and during my med break of several years, I'd get into a state like this and worry that I'd never come out of it even though I knew better intellectually. Now, I can tell myself that I'll come out of it and be able to feel that yes, I will, that this isn't the end of the world or anything.

In more upbeat news, I had sushi for lunch today. It's my usual running!around!doing!errands!Day reward. It took me a kind of absurd amount of time to realize why I like sushi; I mean beyond the fact that it tastes good. Tonight when we went out to dinner, I had spinach and ricotta ravioli. It was served with a pesto sauce and additional spinach and mushrooms. I spent time maneuvering my food around so I got half a ravioli--these were the big ones--and a mushroom slice and a little bit of spinach in each bite because these things were served together and meant to be eaten together to get the full effect. It's not that it was work or anything and it was quite tasty and I only spilled sauce on my shirt once, so yeah, it was a good meal. But with sushi, you don't have to mess with it. Every bite is that perfect bite where you taste exactly what the cook wanted you to taste. And sure, it may turn out that you don't like that particular cook's culinary vision, but when you do there's something really appealing about the way each piece is perfectly balanced, like a perfume blend* or that one musical passage that gives you goosebumps.

I'm also fond of single notes and have decided that one of my lifetime goals is to figure out if I'm right and raw salmon really is just a tiny bit better than raw red tuna. This is am important subject and requires a great deal of research.

*Which reminds me: I really need to start doing perfume review posts soon.

Birthday n Stuff

First off, thank you for all the well wishes! *hugs flists and circles*

Saturday we went to Zen Sushi and it was so very good. In addition to our usual tempura asparagus appetizer, we also got the tempura scallops, which were nummy. I had intended to get an order of salmon sashimi but after we finished the Japanese Bagel, the Corbett roll and the Zig Zag roll, we were stuffed. Next time!

So this showed up at the door this morning!

It wasn't acutally a surprise because I was right there when Nancy ordered it. It's slim and lovely and holds 16GB of stuff and it's purple and and and...I loffs it lots. It took a little while to get used to the way you scroll, which seems backward to me. Oh and I got a little confused when I somehow managed to slow the speed of an audiobook down; [info - personal] anatsuno sounds very odd at slow speeds. But I managed to figure it all out and did I mention that I love it lots? 'Cos I totally do.

My actual birthday is Saturday. Every year I say, "I want to go to Tapa the World and have tapas" and then, every year, I end up saying, "you know? What I really want is sushi." I gave up this year; we're going to Zen Sushi, mostly because my birthday is on the Midtown Second Saturday Art Walk this year and the tapa place is right in the middle of midtown and parking and getting a table will be impossible.

And then on Sunday, we're going to Giants Game with [info - personal] sock_marionette and her pal Ruby.

Also?

I have an awesome Nano!

That is all. :)

ITunes meme

This is obviously not the post about the Moon Landing. I've had an incredibly crappy day (seriously, the kind of day that requires booze or a pint of Ben & Jerry's or both), so all I have mental energy for is a meme.

Now that's more like it!

Today, I had to take the car into the shop. This time it was Shep (the Jetta) and the problem was the interior lights not turning off after you put the key in the ignition and start the car. This is only mildly annoying during the day, but makes it really hard to drive at night time.

The problem is covered under the warranty, so the only real issue was taking it in to the dealership, which I did this morning. They actually have a shuttle service, but since the guy said it would only take about an hour and they have a nice waiting area, I decided to wait. They actually have a couple desks set up and wifi, so I settled down with my lap top and worked on my SGA BB (I hit 28,500 words today!). There was a TV going, but it wasn't too bad because: a) I couldn't see it and b) it was coverage of some golf tournament in Scotland so it wasn't loud or all that annoying.

About an hour later, I was on my way. Yes, it was that easy. Okay so they have to order a part and what we have now is a temporary fix, but still, aside from the whole getting up at 10am thing, it was all quite simple and didn't involve a Hell Volvo.

And then...I stopped at Coco's for lunch and discovered that whoever it is that invents their fuds needs to be canonized. They've come up with a egg salad and bacon sandwich on grilled sour dough. Not only is it an excellent idea on paper, but trust me, it actually works in real life. OMG NOMS!

Ruth and the Terrible Hell Volvo

So I had to take Kurt (our VW Bug) in for a realignment today. I had my laptop and book with me, but the guy said it might take quite a while and did I want a loaner car? This isn't something they've done before, but since they have the world's tiniest waiting area and somewhat uncomfortable chairs, I took them up on the offer.

So I ended up with an older model Volvo. I started it up and thought, 'bet this doesn't have an air conditioner.' But no, it actually did and I was perfectly comfortable driving it home.

Fast forward five hours to 4:30pm. It's about 100F/37C outside.

The shop calls to tell me that the Bug is ready. So I head out in the Volvo and notice that a couple of warning lights are on that weren't on earlier. And...none of the peripheral electrical stuff is working. Power brakes and power steering were fine, but! A/C? Not so much. 'Okay,' I think, 'I'll just roll down the windows.' Yeah, only the windows are powered.

So I had to drive for about 25 minutes, heading west so the sun was right on my windshield, with no a/c and the windows up. That was two hours ago; since then I've driven the Bug home with the a/c blasting, gone to the store (which was quite cool inside) and hung out at home with the a/c blasting. I've only now cooled down enough to where I think I can risk a coolish shower without getting dizzy.

The guy at the shop was really really apologetic and offered to buy me a bottle of water out of their soda machine. I also got out of there for less than $100, which is kind of unusual except for minor stuff like oil changes, so that's good.
I remember the wedding. It was ten years ago today, at ten in the morning because it was an outdoor thing and June in SoCal is hot, hot, hot. It was clear and blue outside and the roses in the back yard were blooming. Our minister was a newly ordained Unitarian; we were the first wedding he ever did. We had a cake with irises on it and aside from that and the bagels from our favorite bagel place, my dad made the other food--a whole brunch of cool nibbly items. My sister and an old friend stood with me, and I wore green and black--green palazzo pants and tank top with a black velvet vest with shisha mirrors on it. Our rings were silver with Celtic interlace.
