Ilya Levin received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering in 1987 from the Institute of Computer Technologies, Latvian Academy of Science. From 1987 he was the Head of the Computer Science Department in the Leningrad Institute of New Technologies (in the former USSR). Between 1993 and 1997, Ilya Levin was the Head of the Computer Systems Department in Holon Institute of Technology, Israel. In 1997, he was a Research Fellow in the Computer Science Department of the University of Massachusetts. For four years between 2003-2006, Ilya Levin was an Associate Professor of the School of Engineering at the Bar Ilan University. In 2014 and 2018, he was a visiting professor at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, Italy, and Aix-Marseille Université, France. Presently, Prof. Ilya Levin is a Full Professor in the School of Education of Tel Aviv University. His recent research interests include Computer Design, Cultural Studies of Information Society, Science, and Technology Education. Prof. Levin is the author of around 200 research papers, both in Computer Engineering and in Humanities.

Specifically, monitoring and testing of students' knowledge, of professional and personal skills/abilities are in the focus of the study. A new assessment approach called Mixed Diagnostic Testing (MDT) is discussed in the paper. The approach combines two known testing concepts: unconditional testing and conditional testing. In the unconditional testing, each next question of the test sequence is independent of previous test results; in contrast with it the conditional testing includes a sequence of questions strongly connected with the previous test results. The proposed approach provides designing of an individual learning "trajectory" for each student. According to our hypothesis, such a trajectory is especially important since it allows personalizing the learning process, thus increasing its efficiency. The paper provides theoretical analysis of the MDT approach, as well as of its implementation in a certain academic course "Information technologies". For preparing (constructing) of mixed diagnostic tests, experts' knowledge of specific subjects should be utilized. It is shown, that the use of MDT effectively supports and facilitates development of curriculum. The MDT reduces both time and cost expenses for organization and management of the educational process. Since the MDT may actually replace a teacher in the teacher's function as a consultant, the proposed approach is especially promising in the blended learning.

The article deals with the evolution of the constructionist learning approach from the beginning ... more The article deals with the evolution of the constructionist learning approach from the beginning of the era of information technologies through the digital age. The evolution of constructionism is demonstrated in connection with two associated processes: changes in the human worldview related to the digital shift, and the corresponding transformations in human society. The study examines the evolution of basic constructionist ideas: 1) "microworlds" as "incubators of knowledge"; 2) a child as "the architect of his [or her] intelligent structures"; 3) the computer as "a machine that brings back a natural character to learning"; 4) coding as a "universal learning activity" that enables the study of fundamental scientific ideas. The constructionist ideas are analyzed in the context of today's digital reality. The main contribution of the study is formulating the changes in classical constructionism as transformations that correspond to worldview components: activating the perception of self; democratization of the mutual interactions with others; virtualization of the conception of reality; integration the subject and object in their interaction with reality.

The chapter deals with a new research field that has arisen at the intersection of scientific exp... more The chapter deals with a new research field that has arisen at the intersection of scientific experiment and emerging digital technologies. The classical triad of experimental research ‘subject-instrument-object' and its implementation in science education are in the focus of the chapter. The triad is studied in its evolution to a so-called digital triad corresponding to the experimental science of digital society. In the digital triad, each of the three components are transformed. The knowing subject - researcher is transformed to the digital scholar; the experimental instrument is transformed on the base of emerging cloud and mobile technologies; the research object comprising hybrid natural-artificial components emerges. The digital transformations of the experimental research triad and educational practices based on the digital triad are manifested in a number of pioneer inquiry-based projects analyzed in the chapter.

From smartwatches to activity tracking devices, wearables are finding their way into many aspects of our lives, changing the way we think about ourselves and the world around us. The rapid adoption of these tools in everyday life hints at the possibilities these devices may hold in school and other educational settings. Drawing on examples taken from a five-year study using wearable fitness tracking devices in elementary and middle school classrooms, this paper presents two examples of how wearable devices can be appropriated for use in school settings. These examples focus on instances where students turned activity trackers into objects of inquiry using data from familiar activities.

The Authors propose decomposing the finite state machine (FSM) which describes the sequential circuit of interest, thus obtaining a number of component FSMs respectively describing the number of component circuits. Being decomposed to the number of component circuits, the initial circuit becomes able to detect faults much faster since, at each specific moment of time, one of the component circuits (FSMs) is working and all the others are being tested. The paper deals with the following aspects: a) the decomposition procedure; b) evaluation of the proposed approach based on a fault injection simulation; c) estimation of trade-off between the reduction of latency and the required hardware overhead. Results of the study are tested on a number of standard benchmarks.

The paper deals with the problem of linear decomposition of a system of Boolean functions. A nove... more The paper deals with the problem of linear decomposition of a system of Boolean functions. A novel analytic method for linearization, by reordering the values of the autocorrelation function, is presented. The computational complexity of the linearization procedure is reduced by performing calculations directly on a subset of autocorrelation values rather than by manipulating the Boolean function in its initial domain. It is proved that unlike other greedy methods, the new technique does not increase the implementation cost. That is, it provides linearized functions with a complexity that is not greater than the complexity of the initial Boolean functions. Experimental results over standard benchmarks and random Boolean functions demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed procedure in terms of the complexity measure and the execution time.

Self-testability of the network component is ensured by encoding the automaton internal states by equilibrium codes and elongating the input state codes. Therefore, the microprogram description of the operation of the component is transformed into a positive monotonic system of disjunctive normal forms, i.e., design specification for the component. Precisely monotonic disjunctive normal forms ensure the monotonic generation of solitary constant faults in programmable logical matrices and input poles of the automaton component at the component outputs and steady propagation of the aftereffects of a faults from its emergence point in some component up to the network outputs. Therefore, testers can be used only for external components, whose outputs are the network outputs, and only the output of these components can be observed without regard for their internal states.

Checkers are used only for FSMs, which output lines are at the same time output lines of the network. The checkers observe output lines of these FSMs. The method is based on reducing the problem to a self-checking synchronous FSM design. The latter is provided by applying a special description of FSM namely, so-called unate Programmable Logic Array (PLAu) description. Single stuck-at fault on the FSM poles and gate poles are considered. PLAu realization of FSM allows a factorized or multilevel logic synthesis. They both provide a unidirectional manifestation of the above mentioned faults on the output lines of the corresponding FSMs. This realization also gives rise to a transparency of each component FSM of the network for the faults. This paper presents a numerical convolution based approach for transient simulation of distribute... more This paper presents a numerical convolution based approach for transient simulation of distributed networks characterized by band limited frequency domain data when terminated with arbitrary nonlinear circuits. The proposed algorithm uses time-frequency decompositions to extract multiple propagation delays of a distributed network and the associated attenuation losses in a piecewise manner, and implements inverse fast Fourier transform to efficiently convert the frequency response into a sum of delayed time domain responses. Numerical examples illustrate that the proposed algorithm shows significantly more accurate results for networks with multiple long delays when compared to existing numerical convolution techniques.

The subdivision of the circuits into cascades is made in such a way that any failure in each of them results in a distortion of no more than one binary digit at its input. There is developed an universal sequential-sampling circuit with stepby-step control, where the detection of errors does not require additional (coding) variables. The results of this investigation showed that the proposed method for operational control entails considerably lesser hardware and power expenditure as compared with the circuits based on application of the Berger code.

Numerical examples illustrate that the proposed algorithm shows significantly more accurate results for networks with multiple long delays when compared to existing numerical convolution techniques.

The subdivision of the circuits into cascades is made in such a way that any failure in each of them results in a distortion of no more than one binary digit at its input. There is developed an universal sequential-sampling circuit with stepby-step control, where the detection of errors does not require additional (coding) variables. The results of this investigation showed that the proposed method for operational control entails considerably lesser hardware and power expenditure as compared with the circuits based on application of the Berger code.

The main changes in science education initiated by Information and Communication Technologies (IC... more The main changes in science education initiated by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are associated with advances in a number of educational technologies: Microcomputer Based Lab; Modeling and Simulation; Mobile Technology; Networked Learning; Mixed-Reality Technology. The advances define the changes in science education and, consequently, gained broad attention of educational researchers. Despite the abundance of opinions, approaches, and interpretations of the changes in science education, two key alternative interpretations explain the ICT integration phenomenon. The first interpretation considers ICT as a tool for enhancing classical science education by providing different emerging technological means. In contrast, an alternative interpretation considers ICT much wider than a tool. Supporters of this interpretation perceive thus digital science class as a new phenomenon in education, since the mentioned technologies changed the class qualitatively, brought to it a new essence, which is not just a sum of the added technologies. In our research, we have chosen the second interpretation as our assumption. We hypothesize that the changes of teachers’ worldview are vital for their understanding the role of technology in science education in its transformative stage. To check this hypothesis we propose a new conceptual framework for study and analysis the ICT integration phenomenon in science education. The proposed framework is a modification of SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition) model for perception of technology. Our modified SAMR framework can be used for assessing the teachers’ worldview regarding ICT integration in science education. Specifically, the teachers’ awareness about such kind of assessment opens a way for their reflexing and improving their own teaching, which in turn affects their learners. An initial study of the proposed framework was conducted with a group of eighteen teachers in the School of Education at Tel Aviv University, who had undergone a specific training course. The initial study has confirmed our hypothesis and indicated the high efficiency of the proposed framework.

This shift represents a revolution in human history – the so-called digital revolution. This revolution changes peoples’ understanding of their place in the world, as people no longer merely consider humanity a part of the nature, but also a part of the artificial world that humans have created. The digital revolution changes peoples’ perception of society. In the digital society, people have unlimited and ubiquitous access to desirable information, which, in turn, becomes personalized and context-cognizant. Obviously, the above transformations involving such fundamental features of the human being (the emergence of the informational abundance, transforming ways of observation of the world, and a changing view on the nature of surrounding objects) could not possibly leave unchanged key components of human culture such as scientific inquiry. The paper deals with a new research field that has arisen at the intersection of scientific experiment and emerging digital technologies. This new field deals with the nature of experimental science, the nature of digital technology, as well as the interrelations between experimental science and digital technologies. The classical triad of experimental research ‘subject-instrument-object’ is in the focus of the paper. The triad is studied in its evolution to a so-called digital triad, which corresponds to the experimental science of digital society. In the digital triad, each of the three components of the classical one are transformed: (1) the knowing subject - researcher is transformed to the digital scholar; (2) an experimental instrument is transformed on the base of emerging technologies; and (3) a new research objects – a hybrid natural-artificial object emerges. Digital transformations in science education corresponding to the digital triad are manifested in a number of presented in the paper pioneer projects of inquiry-based science education.

The triad is studied in its evolution to a so-called digital triad corresponding to the experimental science of digital society. In the digital triad, each of the three components are transformed. The knowing subject - researcher is transformed to the digital scholar; the experimental instrument is transformed on the base of emerging cloud and mobile technologies; the research object comprising hybrid natural-artificial components emerges. The digital transformations of the experimental research triad and educational practices based on the digital triad are manifested in a number of pioneer inquiry-based projects analyzed in the chapter.
