Students’ involvements are required in group attempt. Group works in designing and authoring a courseware are not an easy task. The purpose of this study is to identify student’s difficulties in completing their authoring activities or collaborative works in conventional environments. This study was conducted to design and develop an online collaborative tool through grid portal technology. UTM Grid Portal is developed for students of Faculty of Education to accomplish their courseware development project. Students engaged in collaborative learning might use blog as a medium to discuss with group members in order to gather information, sharing ideas and distributing tasks. The evaluation process was carried out to obtain students engagement and involvement in collaborative environment activity. The study sample consisted of 36 undergraduate students enrolled in SPM 2332 (Authoring Language) course. Data was gathered using qualitative approach which was through blog discussions as a link in UTM Grid Portal. Results from the analysis show that students’ activity in group work can be divided into three main categories which are cooperative, collaborative, and support as well as task distribution. Cooperative and collaborative in students’ activity involve sharing ideas, information, and problems as well as opinions and suggestions. Besides, students support other group members by giving motivations, updating progresses and showing respect to others.

Uneven task distribution however, is commonly associated with conventional collaborative learning. This study therefore was conducted to develop an efficient authoring infrastructure dealing with online collaborative tools and collaborative authoring environment based on grid portal technology to address the limitations and problems associated with conventional approach. The evaluation process was carried out to obtain students engagement and involvement in collaborative environment activities. The study sample consisted of 36 undergraduate students enrolled in SPM 2332 (Authoring Language) course. Data was gathered using qualitative approach through e-mail interview and blog discussions as a link in UTM Grid Portal. This Grid Portal was developed for students of University Technology Malaysia's Faculty of Education to accomplish their courseware development project. The study was able to identify the critical elements in designing the Grid Portal. These were then incorporated in the resulting online collaborative learning system with Grid Portal.

This study presents an efficient authoring infrastructure dealing with online collaborative tools and collaborative authoring environment based on grid portal technology to solve the unequal distribution of task (among students in a group) and compensation (in terms of performance evaluation i.e. results in grades and positive feedback/comments from their instructors/lecturers) problem. We propose the grid portal technology to support online collaborative efforts among students on distributed parallel computing system to make it faster and efficient in order to enhance authoring support in courseware design. An open source grid portal software has used to design the authoring infrastructure along with PVM, MPI, JAVA on Linux platform. This grid poral software and the grid architecture bring computational clusters together into a grid.

This study introduces a web assisted e-learning environment for creating, sharing and exploring dynamic contents. An authoring environment allows to built software or digital contents and an educational authoring activities infrastructure allows to create, edit and share artifacts like websites, interactive hypermedia, microworlds, simulations. This study presents an efficient authoring infrastructure dealing with online collaborative tools and collaborative authoring environment based on grid portal technology to solve the unequal distribution of task problem as well as investigates how to improve access and usefulness for the users of such OER. The authors explain a case study of an e-learning environment and used for the implementation of an online graphics, animation, audio and video technology courses. The aim is to show how such environment can offer web assisted education that goes beyond providing digital learning materials.
