Ancient Iranian Culture and Languages

Ancient Iranian speakers have been limiting the meaning of verbs through combining preverbs with them and herewith could express ideas more precisely. What we can find in references about preverbs is not sufficient and clear enough to determine morphology, function and origin of preverbs definitely. The purpose of this paper is to investigate twenty ancient Iranian preverbs and their different forms, to evaluate their functional frequency, and to clarify morphology, function and Indo-European origin of them. It will be discussed that naming them 'Verbal Prefixes' in Avesta and Sanskrit texts from morphological point of view cannot be correct. Also it will be clarified that preverbs are remains of a group of Proto-Indo-European particle adverbs that hereafter in ancient languages would be used as preverbs combining with verbs to modify the meaning of them.

Ancient Iranian prevervs - changes:
Ancient Iranian speakers have been limiting the meaning of verbs through combining preverbs with them and herewith could make Particle Complex Verbs out of them. In the first phase of long term history of preverbs, different mechanisms were working in the case of grammaticalization to generate them from Proto-Indo-European particle adverbs. Next in the second phase, some other mechanisms made morphological, semantic and phonological changes. They changed preverbs to verbal prefixes and then to dead prefixes. Finally Iranian languages made new preverbs through changing ancient adverbs and prepositions and started to use them instead of the old. These newly invented preverbs were being used widely in the middle Iranian languages and continued to being used with a few changes even in New Persian. The purpose of this paper is to investigate mechanisms involving the changes of ancient preverbs from Proto-Indo-European to ancient Iranian and then to middle Iranian languages.

در آغاز سده بیستم میلادی از زبانهای ایرانی میانه تنها زبان فارسی میانه شناخته شده بود. در نخستین نیمه سده بیستم میلادی چهار زبان ایرانی میانه پارتی، سغدی، ختنی و خوارزمی کشف شد ولی زبان بلخی تنها زبان ایرانی میانه است که در نیمه دوم سده بیستم میلادی کشف شد. در آغاز چند کتیبه و هشت سند کوتاه و تعدادی مهر و سکه تنها مدارک برای بررسی زبان بلخی بود و توصیف کاملی از زبان بلخی به دست نیامده بود.  ولی با کشف اسناد اقتصادی و حقوقی قابل توجهی و دو کتیبه نوین به دست آمد که دیدی کاملتر از زبان بلخی در پیش ما گشوده شد. با این آگاهیهای جدید در این مقاله بر آنیم جایگاه زبان بلخی در میان زبانهای ایرانی و خویشاوندی با دیگر زبانهای ایرانی و برهم کنش زبان بلخی با زبانهای دیگر ایرانی را بررسی کنیم. نخست ثابت می‌‌کنیم که زبان بلخی یک زبان شرقی است و ویژگیهای آوایی و دستوری و واژگانی زبانهای شرقی را دارد.پس از آن جایگاه زبان بلخی را در گروههای شمال شرقی و جنوب شرقی روشن می‌سازیم. سپس رابطه زبان بلخی را با زبانهای ایرانی میانه شامل سغدی، خوارزمی، ختنی، پارتی و فارسی میانه بررسی شده است و همگوییهای میان این زبانها آورده شده است. پس از آن همگوییهای میان زبان بلخی و زبانهای شرقی نو از جمله یدغه، مونجی، اشکاشمی، یزغلامی، روشانی، وخی، شغنی، پشتو و ... آورده شده است و رابطه بین آنها مورد بررسی قرار گرفته است. سپس درستی سخن هنینگ –که گفته است زبان بلخی در جایگاهی بین پشتو و یدغه-منجی از یک سو و سغدی و خوارزمی و پارتی از دیگر سو قرار دارد- با استفاده داده‌های جدید به دست آمده از اسناد نویافته بلخی از شمال افغانستان مورد مطالعه قرار گرفته است. در پایان برهم کنش زبان بلخی و زبانهای ایرانی دیگر شامل ختنی، سغدی ، فارسی نو و ... آمده است.
