Four derivatives of 1,1&a... more Four derivatives of 1,1'-(benzene-1,3-diylmethylene)bis[4-[(disubstituted)amino]-pyridinium] dibromides (2-5) and six derivatives of 1,1',1"-(benzene-1,3,5-triylmethylene)-tris[4-[(disubstituted)amino]pyridinium] tribromides (6-11) were synthesised and examined for their inhibition of human choline kinase (ChoK) and antiproliferative activities. The latter are more potent as ChoK inhibitors than the former, but the antiproliferative activities against the HT-29 cell line show the opposite tendency. The higher affinity of the trispyridinium compared with the bispyridinium ones may be due to direct binding of the third pyridinium group to ChoK or may arise from a reduction of the unfavourable entropy of binding via an increase of the 'local concentration' of pyridinium groups.

Important motifs for enzyme activity and structure are conserved in plant and bacterial PEPCs, with the exception of a phosphorylation domain present at the N terminus of all plant PEPCs reported so far, which is absent in the bacterial enzymes. Here, we describe a gene from Arabidopsis, stated as Atppc4, encoding a PEPC, which shows more similarity to Escherichia coli than to plant PEPCs. Interestingly, this enzyme lacks the phosphorylation domain, hence indicating that it is a bacterial-type PEPC. Three additional PEPC genes are present in Arabidopsis, stated as Atppc1, Atppc2, and Atppc3, encoding typical plant-type enzymes. As most plant PEPC genes, Atppc1, Atppc2, and Atppc3 are formed by 10 exons interrupted by nine introns. In contrast, Atppc4 gene has an unusual structure formed by 20 exons. A bacterial-type PEPC gene was also identified in rice (Oryza sat...

The persistence of the respiratory failure, once the alveolar haemorrhage had ceased, was apparently due to diffuse alveolar damage in organization. The recognition of this proliferative reaction through the performance of transbronchial biopsy allowed the initiation of a correct treatment with which a favourable response was obtained.

This oriented synthesis produced 45 inhibitors of choline kinase with antitumour activity against the HT-29 cell line. In an attempt to understand the antiproliferative activity, a quantitative structure–activity relationship was developed. The unknown σR and σR+

The purpose of the study is to determine the prevalence rates of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in a population-based study of Hispanics aged Ն40 years.

A sample of randomly selected block groups in Tucson and Nogales, Arizona, were selected for study. Participants were interviewed at home; a majority of the interviews were conducted in Spanish. The home interview included questions from the NEI-VFQ-25 and HHANES: Presenting acuity was done using ETDRS methodology, followed by a standardized eye examination by an ophthalmologist. The authors analyzed the internal consistency of the NEI-VFQ-25 responses using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and the construct validity by assessing the relationship between presenting acuity and scale scores, adjusting for age and gender. A second model was also explored to determine whether other demographic variab...

Proyecto VER is a population-based study of blindness and visual impairment in Mexican Americans in Arizona. Block groups in Tucson and Nogales were randomly selected with probability proportional to the size of the Mexican-American population aged 40 and older. Participants had a complete ophthalmic evaluation, including assessment of presenting and best corrected visual acuity using standardized procedures. Those with presenting visual acuity worse than 20/30 had refraction to determine best corrected vision. A home questionnaire and a clinic examination provided data on education, perception of visual impairment, income, and acculturation. The prevalence of presenting visual acuity worse than 20/40 was 8.2%, with uncorrected refractive error accounting for 73% of the impaired acuity. I...

A random sample of block groups with Hispanic residents in Nogales and Tucson, Arizona, were selected for study. Participants were interviewed at home with a questionnaire that included the NEI-VFQ-25, an instrument measuring vision-related quality of life. Acuity was obtained with Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) charts and standard protocol. Cataract was determined by clinical examination, diabetic retinopathy was diagnosed on stereo fundus photographs, and glaucoma was diagnosed on the basis of clinical examination and visual field results. Analyses were done to determine the degree of association between subscale scores and acuity in the better-seeing eye, monocular visual i...

Some explanations for this stress the importance of unemployment duration compared with entry rates to the unemployment pool. Long-term unemployment rates are particularly high among women in Spain. The object of this paper is to investigate the determinants of unemployment duration among women. It will consider personal characteristics (education and age), family background, socio-economic variables (the number of household earners and household income) and the effect of unemployment benefits, using data from the

Some important obstacles to increasing female activity rates have already been removed, as younger cohorts of women show a more permanent attachment to the labour force than older women, meeting even high unemployment, which is especially acute for women and young people. Under the recent labour market reform, it is hoped that part-time contracts, which were first regulated in 1984, would be a way of facilitating flexibility and an incentive for employers to create jobs, as the experience of other countries has shown. The relative novelty of part-time work in Spain is the reason why this typically female employment regime has not been much explored in Spain yet, in spite of its important role in the reorganisation of the employment system.

In this analysis evaluated the clinical outcome <15 days of the start of therapy of all enrolled outpatients with acute DVT in the lower limbs. Results: During the study period, 124 (2.8%) of 4405 DVT patients had at least one adverse event (symptomatic PE, 15; recurrent DVT, 18; major bleeding, 37; death, 68). On multivariate analysis, bilateral DVT, renal insufficiency, body weight <70 kg, recent immobility, chronic heart failure, and cancer were associated with an increased risk for adverse events. When these variables were added into the derivation sample, the area under receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve was 0.81 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.76 to 0.86). Patients with a risk score of <2 had a 1.2% incidence of adverse events (23 in 1935 patients) compared with the 6.8% incidence in high-risk patients. In the validation sample, the area under ROC curve was 0.79 (95% CI, 0.70 to 0.88). Low-risk patients had a 1.0% incidence of adverse events, and those at high-risk had a 4.7% incidence. Conclusion: A simple risk score based on easily available variables can identify DVT outpatients at low risk for an adverse outcome. This information may help clinicians to decide which DVT patients may be eligible for ambulatory treatment. ( J Vasc Surg 2006;44:789-93.)

The viral efficacy upon reintroduction was also evaluated. Patients and methods: All patients with undetectable viral load while on HAART were prospectively followed to detect any treatment interruption. We analysed viral and cellular kinetics, incidence of resistance mutations, clinical outcome and results after therapy resumption. Results: Twenty patients were included, mean time since HIV diagnosis was 95 months and time with undetectable viral load 16 months. Treatment was interrupted because of adverse effects, cancer, tuberculosis or patient will. Treatment was reintroduced after 4 weeks using, if possible, the same combination. HIV viral load was detectable on day 28 after interruption in 18 patients (90%). Median of CD4 cell count (p25ep75) decreased from 478/mm 3 (96e716) to 257/mm 3 (118e663) (p ¼ 0.5). Resistance mutations were found in 9 patients (45%) after interruptions. Treatment was reintroduced in 14 patients; all of them achieved viral suppression.
