Professor Yasha Jacob Grobman
Yasha Jacob Grobman is a professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning at the Technion and the founding member of the Technion Computational Design research group (T_CODE), as well as an award-winning practicing architect.
Prof. Grobman's research focuses on architectural design computation, developing cutting-edge digital tools and methods for design and fabrication. He also advocates for a broader understanding of architectural performance, encompassing not only environmental and structural aspects but also perceptual and behavioral aspects of architectural space.
Prof. Grobman is a co-author of several books, including the 2011 book "Performalism - Between Form, Function, and Performance in Contemporary Architecture," and the author or editor of over 90 other book chapters and refereed publications. He is also a sought-after speaker at architectural schools and frequently participates in architectural exhibitions worldwide. Additionally, he has received numerous awards and research grants, including first place in the 2017 AEC Excellence Awards in the sustainability category for the design of the Porter School for Environmental Studies building, the Yuli Ofer 2009 First Prize for Advancement of Architecture, an Israeli Science Foundation personal research grant, and the EU Horizon 2020 FET open Grant.
In addition to his research, Prof. Grobman is an active practicing architect at Grobman Architects. Most of his design projects serve as test beds for his research ideas, design and fabrication methods, and promote state-of-the-art technology in architectural practice. Many of these projects have arisen from award-winning design competitions, including the Porter School of Environmental Studies building at Tel Aviv University, which won an international design competition for sustainability. The building holds the distinction of being Israel's first LEED Platinum-certified building, in addition to being the recipient of the Israeli government's "Diamond Level" Green Building Standard (5281).
Grobman served as the Dean of the faculty of Architecture and town Planning at the Technion from 2019-2022. Prior to his appointment as dean Prof. Grobman held numerous administrative positions at the Technion, including associate dean for student affairs for his faculty and chair of the Center for Architectural Research and Development.
Prof. Grobman also actively participates in various professional activities, serving as an associate editor of the Architectural Science Review journal, a member of the Israeli National Building Research Institute, and an invited jury member in national and international design competitions and awards.
