Pathways for College Instructors

At NYC Public Schools (NYCPS), we value the expertise of college professors and instructors who bring advanced subject knowledge and teaching experience to our classrooms.

By earning Transitional G certification from the New York State Education Department (NYSED), qualified candidates with post-graduate degrees and college teaching experience can qualify to become certified NYCPS teachers in core academic subjects like math, science, English, history, and World Languages.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in the subject area they wish to teach. They must have also earned a graduate degree and have four semesters of paid, post-secondary teaching experience in their desired certification area.

How to Apply

Step 1

Apply for Transitional G Certification

Apply for the Transitional G certificate in NYSED's TEACH system. You will be asked to submit your official bachelor’s and graduate transcripts and proof of fingerprint clearance.

Step 2

Send Proof of Your Teaching Experience

Ask your Department Chairperson to send a letter, on official college letterhead, directly to the NYSED Office of Teaching Initiatives at [email protected], verifying the details of your paid, post-secondary teaching experience. Ask them to copy you on the email so you have a copy for step 3.

Complete the NYCPS Certified Teacher Application

Enter your certification details, a reference, preferences for grade level and borough, and upload your resume as well as your Department Chairperson letter as proof of certification. The initial application review can take up to four weeks.

Step 4

Secure a NYCPS Teaching Position

To earn Transitional G certification from NYSED, you must first secure a teaching position with NYCPS.

Once your NYCPS application is accepted, you’ll gain access to the New Teacher Finder (NTF), an online job portal where you can search for open positions and connect with principals at your preferred schools. You may also be invited to networking events, job search workshops, and school tours.

Reach out to principals with a brief cover letter expressing your interest. Be prepared for interviews and demo lessons.

After you receive a job offer, the NYCPS Human Resources Director (HRD) will submit a district recommendation to NYSED so you can officially earn your certification.

Step 5

Prepare for Your Start Date

Once hired, you will get instructions on how to complete several onboarding tasks before your first day.
