It argues that such studies and portraits of Jesus have overlooked a significant portrait of Jesus, which sets Jesus in the first century socioeconomic context as being helpless, an additional portrait to the various existing portraits of Jesus. A search for the true historical Jesus should recognize Jesus being a helpless Jew as revealed in the Gospels for such a portrait stands a chance of redefining the entire life of the critical historical Jesus and still places Jesus within the confines of the Gospels.

Using historical-critical method, this paper argues that the alternative eclectic "original text" of the New Testament (NA 28 or UBSGNT 5) is attempting to paint a different and a misleading picture of the "original text" from the New Testament's autographs of the first century and that the twenty-first century should not overstretch the search for the "original text" since originality depends on existing and quality evidences. Evaluating a number of new discoveries of manuscripts, new and quality discoveries would continue to surface and would help expand the critical apparatus of the Greek New Testament. However, reliance on manuscripts with Egyptian roots would enhance the discipline and drag us to achieving the proposed aims.

Chapter five which is entitled “The Origins of Textual Criticism as a Scholarly Discipline” needs a re-evaluation in textual scholarship in order to reinstate Metzger’s position on patristic textual criticism in Africa. Using the historical analytical method, this chapter evaluates Metzger’s position on early patristic textual criticism of the Greek New Testament. It argues that since scholars (for instance, Epp and Holmes) believe that relying on the history of the manuscripts will serve as a means for the restoration of the text of the Greek New Testament, ‘history’ in textual studies should be retraced to include the early contribution and paradigms of patristic text-critical scholarship.
