Bill Roscoe

Founder

Professor Bill Roscoe is a co-founder of TBTL. He has worked at Oxford University throughout his career and has been a Full Professor since 1997. He is an internationally famous researcher across multiple areas of computer science including security, concurrency, fintech, blockchain and verification. He is known for his work on Hoare’s CSP, the model checker FDR, his early work on occam and the transputer, and on the design and verification of secure systems. His work has more than 15,000 citations. He held senior management positions in University College Oxford (Univ) and Oxford University 1993-2014 including 10 exceptionally successful years as head of the University’s Computer Science Department. He is now part time at Oxford.

He is the author of 3 books, about 200 academic papers and a large number of granted and pending patents, almost all in blockchain and security. He has supervised more than 30 doctorates at Oxford.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), and Academia Europaea, and is the recipient of several awards including (for his group) the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement in 1990. He is on the steering committee of the World Internet Conference (WIC).

Dr. Bangdao Chen is a co-founder of TBTL. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from the Department of Computer Science of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, MSc and DPhil in Computer Science from the University of Oxford. His main research directions were decentralised identification and authentication, payment security, and communication security. Currently, he is mainly engaged in information security, blockchain related technology research and product development. He and his mentor Professor Bill Roscoe co-established The Blockhouse Technology Ltd. (TBTL), and University College Oxford Blockchain Research Centre In Oxford UK, and Oxford-Hainan Blockchain Research Institute in Hainan China.​

Sharon Backer-Holst

Sharon Backer-Holst joined TBTL in March 2024 as Deputy CEO to support the Directors of TBTL in the next phase for the company. Formerly Head of Operations at the Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford, Sharon has over 20 years’ experience at a senior operational level of running both academic and commercial technical organisations. Since leaving the University in 2019 she has been a member of the senior management team at an Oxford healthtech startup preparing the company for scaling as it launched in the US.

Professor Ivan Martinovic is a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford. Ivan is a renowned expert in the field of system security. His research directions primarily include authentication (services and users), network protocol security, and the analysis of trade-offs between system security and performance. He has published over 100 papers in these and other research areas. Before Oxford, Ivan previously worked in the Security Research Lab at UC Berkeley (2011) and in the Secure Network and Computing Centre at University of California Irvine (2009/2010). From 2009 until 2011 he enjoyed a Carl-Zeiss Foundation Fellowship and he was an associate lecturer at TU Kaiserslautern, Germany. He obtained his PhD from TU Kaiserslautern and MSc from TU Darmstadt, Germany.

Srdjan Capkun (Srđan Čapkun) is a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science, ETH Zurich and Chair of the Zurich Information Security and Privacy Center (ZISC). He received his Dipl.Ing. Degree in Electrical Engineering / Computer Science from the University of Split in 1998, and his Ph.D. degree in Communication Systems from EPFL in 2004. Prior to joining ETH Zurich in 2006 he was a postdoctoral researcher in the Networked & Embedded Systems Laboratory (NESL), University of California Los Angeles and an Assistant Professor in the Informatics and Mathematical Modelling Department, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). His research interests are in system and network security. His focus areas are wireless security (in particular, secure positioning), and system security where he focuses on trusted computing and blockchain technologies. In 2016 he received an ERC Consolidator Grant and in 2019 he became a fellow of the ACM.
