This study investigated research productivity of academic staff in research institutes in SouthWe... more This study investigated research productivity of academic staff in research institutes in SouthWest Nigeria between 2009-2014. Descriptive research design was adopted, questionnaire was the data instrument used to collect data. Total enumeration method was used to capture 782 academic staff in the twelve (12) research institutes. Findings show that a total 15,477 research output was published by the academic staff and the level of research productivity of the academic staff is low ((Ě… = 11.51; = 2.36).Articles in journals had highest number with 3,486 (22.6%), followed by conference proceedings which had 2,364 (15.3%) of the publications. The patterns of research productivity of the academic staff in research institutes in SouthWest showed that majority 10,016 (64.7%) of the publications were published locally while 5,461 (35.3%) were published offshore (international outlets). The patterns further showed that majority 5,604 (36.2%) of the research productivity has single authorship, 5,216 (33.7%) while the remaining 4,657 (30.08%) were multiple authorship. Major factors hindering research productivity of academic staff in research institutes are family challenges, financial constraints, inadequate information accessibility, inadequate information literacy and inadequate motivation from employers. The study therefore recommends among other things: establishment of Special Research Trust Fund for development of the research in these institutes, adequate research funds/grants for academic staff, continuous training programmes on information literacy skills, mentoring, improved research skills of academic staff and encouragement of collaboration and interdisciplinary researches among the academic staff in the research institutes.

The paper submits that curricula of these Schools are overdue for re-design if they are to train library and information professionals that will suit the job openings in the 21 st century and beyond. Notable shortcomings in the curricula of most of the Library Schools in Nigeria are in the areas of application of information and communication technology in library and information services, entrepreneurship, as well as non realization of these schools that their products could also be employed in non library related organizations. The paper among other things recommends collapse of most traditional courses in librarianship and introduction of new courses that are information technology driven that will enable products of these universities to fit into the 21 st century library and information science jobs. The paper concludes that there is the need for harmonization and standardization of curricula of Nigerian Universities and it calls on National Association of Library and Information Science Educators (NALISE), Nigerian Library Association and Nigerian Librarian Registration Council and other stake holders in ensuring that library and information professional could be able to compete favorably for the jobs of 21 st century anywhere in the World.

Information literacy could be contingent upon an intrinsic element such as self-efficacy belief. Thus, this study investigates the relationship between perceived self-efficacy and information literacy among library and information science (LIS) undergraduates in Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu – Ode Nigeria (TASUED). Ex-post facto research design was adopted. Using total enumeration technique, data were gathered from all the 108 LIS undergraduates in TASUED using an instrument tagged Self-efficacy and Information literacy questionnaire (SILQ) with reliability values: (a = 0.78) information literacy and (a = 0.75) self-efficacy. All questionnaires were returned, however 100 (93%) were found usable. The study found out that respondents had high self-efficacy beliefs on more items on the scale; the level of information literacy was high in eight of the fifteen indicators on the scale. Perceived self-efficacy had a significant relationship with information literacy (r=0.329; p 0.05). The study recommends standardized information literacy competency training and periodic morale boosting orientation and re-orientation programs for the undergraduates. Keywords: Perceived self-efficacy, Information literacy, Library and information science, Undergraduates, Nigeria.

Survey research designed was adopted; a total 124 were sampled from 250 faculty members in Tai Solarin University of Education using simple random sampling. A total of 124 copies of self-designed questionnaire were administered and all were retrieved and useful. Data collected were analysed using simple percentages, frequency counts, mean, Standard Deviation while hypotheses were tested using inferential statistics.
Findings revealed that awareness level of selected Social Media for research is low as their awareness is only high for Google+ (74.4%) and Facebook (60.8%) for research, major reasons for the preference of social media for research by faculty members were visibility, easier collaboration and opportunity for creation of research communities. Findings further indicated that Facebook (5.7) (0.94), Twitter (5.65) (1.09) and Google+ (5.64), (1.12) are mostly used for research by faculty members surveyed. Major purposes faculty members used social media to do in research are to communicate research output( 0.90), upload research papers on Internet ( 0.97), download research works( 0.95), advertise conferences, seminars (0.88), link-up with other researchers from any part of the globe and to get feedback on their research from colleagues. The study further shows that there is significant relationship in the level of awareness and use of Social media for research by faculty members; there is significant difference in the level of use of social media for research based on gender and there is significant difference between levels of use of social media for research based on academic rank of faculty members of TASUED
