Here pepper is cultivated in an area of 80 ha. by 242 farmers. As pepper vines grow up to 4-5 m height, manual harvesting which is only available method in Kollihills that requires a ladder and a skilled labour. Normally, single bamboo pole is used as a support to climb the shade trees of black pepper for harvesting. It is a very time-consuming activity with lot of difficulties and it is harmful to the vine. In order to avoid such situation in black pepper harvesting, KVK, Namakkal has introduced and supplied Aluminium ladder to the tribal farmers on cost sharing basis under TSP. Comparing the field efficacy of both the ladders, totally 4 pepper vines of 15 yr old or 6 vines of less than 10 yr old were harvested in a day by using bamboo pole when compared to aluminium ladder (6-8 vines respectively). In aluminium pole method, farmer could harvest 500 kg of green berries/ day and spend only Rs.22500/0.4 ha alone for harvesting, besides saved up to Rs.13500/ 0.4 ha as against Rs.36000/0.4 ha in bamboo pole method.

PKM 1 to elucidate the influence of canopy management and chemical manipulation to induce off season flowering and fruiting. Among the various treatments, the plants mulched with 50 micron polyethylene mulch, pruned during the month of July and sprayed with 50 ppm Uniconazole (one and two months after pruning) combination resulted in early induction of off season flowering and subsequent fruit set. The result indicated that the plants grown with above mentioned produced more number of flowers per panicle, more number of panicle per plant, higher fruit set (%) and fruit yield per tree when compared with other treatments during off season.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Namakkal of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Science University (TANUVAS) established a laboratory for the mass multiplication of the parasitoid (Acerophagus papayae) for the control of papaya mealybug during January 2011 under the scheme sponsored by Agricultural Technology and Management Agency (ATMA), Namakkal. The parasitoid was successfully mass multiplied in the laboratory of the KVK on Paracoccus marginatus colonies by three methods (i) on sprouted potato tubers (ii) on cassava leaves and (iii) on papaya leaves and fruits. Of the three methods, the second instar papaya mealybug infested cassava leaves were found to be very suitable for intensive production of parasitoid in a short period of time. The parasitoids were inoculated on mealy bug infested (second instar larvae) cas...

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Namakkal has initiated the production of hybrid vegetable seedlings during 2007 where seedlings were raised under fifty per cent shade net. The side portion of the shade net area was covered with sixteen mesh white net to prevent the entry of sucking pest. Nearly seven lakh seedlings were supplied to the farmers in the district and the technology was disseminated through training programmes and demonstrations. Through this intervention, area under hybrid vegetables cultivation increased up to 400 ha.

The present case was documented for a Permaculture technique adopted by a farmer under the technical guidance of KVK, Namakkal at Palapatti village of Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu, India. The observations revealed that sale of multi vegetables at a time and get a gross income of Rs. 1,500.00 per day than sole vegetable (Rs. 300.00 – 500.00). The permaculture farmer considers that there is a need to diversify the mono cropping to multiple cropping in a piece of land for secure and sustainable future.

Canopy Management and Chemical Manipulation on Pod Characteristics of Annual Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.) Cv. PKM 1 During Off Season Production

To prevent the entry of rain water and to increase the soil temperature around the plant, two mulching treatments were imposed viz., mulching with 50 micron black polythene and without mulching. Pruning of moringa plant was done at one year after planting at different months viz., July, August and September. Growth retardants as uniconazole 50 ppm and mepiquat chloride 50 ppm were sprayed on one month and two months after pruning. Plants mulched with 50 micron black polyethylene film + July pruning+ sprayed with uniconazole 50 ppm has greatly improved pod characteristics like pod length (72.25 cm), pod girth (3.17 cm), flesh content (82.09 g/pod) and number of seeds per pod (23.95).

Farmers pump water from open and bore wells and store it in unlined temporary water storage pond and then irrigate the grown crops. Under the NICRA scheme fourteen temporary storage ponds were lined with HDPE 200 GSM UV irradiated plastic sheets. Most of the farm ponds were of the size of 65 ft length, 45 ft breadth and 6 ft depth with water holding capacity of 17,550 cu.ft. When water was stored in plastic sheet lined ponds, the seepage loss was minimized to ½ ft only in 15 d compared to ½ ft of water loss within 3 days in unlined storage ponds. Ground nut pod yield (22 q/ha) increased by 18 per cent as compared to 18q/ha obtained from fields irrigated from unlined ponds. The increase in yield was due to increased frequency of irrigation once in 10 d in lined pond compared to once in 15 d in unlined ponds. Similarly the weight of onion bulb was 23–25 g in field irrigated with the lined ponds...

PKM 1. The technical programme comprised of two levels of mulching, three pruning levels and three levels of chemical spray (sprayed twice at one and two months after pruning). Among the three different combinations studied, the combination Black polyethylene mulch + July pruning + water spray registered the maximum plant height (3.96 m).Regarding number of branches, the black polyethylene mulch recorded the highest number of primary branches / tree (6.27). In case of pruning treatments, July pruning recorded the highest number of primary branches per tree (5.90). Among the growth retardants, uniconazole 50ppm spray produced more number of primary branches (5.31).

The treatments comprised of propagation of small sized onion through seed, seed treatment with bio control agents (Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescence), nursery management for CO (On) 5, soil test based fertilizer application, foliar spray of micronutrients, and integrated pest management practices for thrips. The plant height at 45 DAP (38.5cm), number of leaf sheath per plant (23), compound bulb weight per plant (14.3-27 g) and bulb yield (20.5t/ha) were highest in CO (On) 5 compared to CO4 and Valayapatti local.
