I’m expanding my Skaven collection one warpstone-tainted creation at a time. Today I’m presenting my Master Moulder, painted using a combination of zenithal priming, Speedpaints, and Contrast paints with additional highlights. This twisted rat-surgeon-butcher yes-yes will eventually join my growing Skaven force for Warcry and beyond. In this post you’ll find plenty of photos plus details on how I achieved the grotesque skin tones and weathered brass effects.

From Underworlds to Warcry and beyond

At the beginning of last year I painted Zikkit’s Tunnelpack for Warhammer: Underworlds, and before that some of the new Clanrats from Skaventide for a tutorial. Even though the Nighthaunt are currently my main faction for Age of Sigmar, I’d really like to expand my small Skaven collection into a Warcry warband as the next step, and then eventually into a Spearhead.

The Spearhead from Skaventide contains Rat Ogres, which are also great for Warcry, and for that you naturally need a Moulder too. In the last wave of Skaven releases, a fantastic Master Moulder sculpt appeared (review here), so perfect.

My approach to painting the Skaven Master Moulder

In autumn last year I then painted the model. For this I used a combination of a zenithal base coat from dark to light, Speedpaint and Citadel Contrast paints, and then additional highlights. You can find the tutorial for my Skaven scheme here:

I explain how I painted the skin in the tutorial, but for the redness and sore spots I used glazes of Speedpaint Familiar Pink thinned with Contrast Medium. I primed the light brass with Two Thin Coats Battle Axe Bronze, which I washed with Agrax Earthshade, then weathered with thinned Vallejo Game Color Scurvy Green, and highlighted with Two Thin Coats Platinum Crown.

There’s always room for improvement…

How do you like my Master Moulder? I’m actually quite satisfied, even though I somehow still have the feeling that there’s slight room for improvement with my Skaven colour scheme. But I’m currently focusing on my Nighthaunt anyway, so I still have some time to mull it over. Maybe an idea will come to me. What do you think?
