PF deletion within Chinese DPs

The aim of this paper is to study the empty categories which may exist inside the Chinese DP doma... more The aim of this paper is to study the empty categories which may exist inside the Chinese DP domain. The primary discussion concerns an empty category which results from the deletion of NP. This paper introduces a novel observation that equation sentences with a “Modifier- Empty-NP” object can only result from ellipsis, and cannot be a base-generated pro-Form in Mandarin Chinese. I further show that the rich array of functional elements and modifications in the internal structure of the Chinese DP can aid linguists in ascertaining the domain over which deletion happens.

This paper explores possible structures of determiner phrases (DPs) using the corpus of Li^4 Zhi^... more This paper explores possible structures of determiner phrases (DPs) using the corpus of Li^4 Zhi^1 Ji^4 荔枝記 (Wanli 萬曆 (1573-1620) Edition of Li^4 Jing^4 Ji^4 荔鏡記), the text of a colloquial Early Southern Min (1566 AD) play. First, the available structures for nominal expressions involving Demonstratives (DEM) tsi^1 只, Numerals (Num) chit^4 一, Classifiers (CL) ge^5 个/個, and Nominal Phrases (NP) are of the three types: Type X1 ([+DEM][+CL]), Type X2 ([+DEM][-CL]), and Type Y ([-DEM]). Second, some of the possible structures, e.g. ＂DEM+NP＂ and ＂Num+NP＂, which do not exist in Mandarin and Southern Min, suggest different structural analyses for DPs in Early Southern Min.

Both sentential final particles (SFPs) and high modals commonly convey the speakers’ knowledge of... more Both sentential final particles (SFPs) and high modals commonly convey the speakers’ knowledge of the world, their judgments, intentions, and subjective attitudes. This paper aims to explore the correlations between high modals and sentence-final particles in Mandarin Chinese (MC). Specifically, two high modals of MC show the behavior of being unable to precede the subject and eliminating their epistemic reading in the presence of SFPs. The phenomenon discussed in this paper is specifically exemplified with yinggai ‘should’ and keneng ‘be likely to’ in MC. We give an analysis about which modals and SFPs are interlaced in terms of their scope positions, so as to explain the phenomena.
