During my recent visit back to Wakayama, I decided to have lunch at one of my favorite ramen spots, Ramen Marui.
Since it’s a popular place, I had to wait over 20 minutes to get in that day.
In Wakayama, many ramen shops refer to their dishes as "chuka soba," but here, it’s simply called "ramen."
I ordered the "ramen"! These days, it’s common for ramen to cost over JPY 1,000, but this shop offers it for JPY 950, tax included, which is quite nice.
The standout feature of this ramen, as you can see in the photo, is the generous amount of green onions. You can order a large size, but even the regular portion comes with a lot.
Typically, green onions are just a topping or part of a "negi ramen," but for green onion lovers, this is a dream come true! Just be prepared to sweat a lot in the summer due to the onions' heat (laughs).
After a while, my bowl arrived! While the green onions are the most visually striking element, the broth and noodles are incredibly delicious as well.
The broth is a pork bone soy sauce base, which is characteristic of Wakayama ramen. It’s not greasy at all, and it has a perfect balance that stands up to the green onions.
A unique feature of Wakayama ramen shops is the presence of "hayazushi," which is mackerel sushi, and boiled eggs placed at the table.
There’s an additional charge for these, but you can help yourself and just report what you’ve eaten when you settle the bill.
The refreshing acidity of the hayazushi pairs perfectly with the ramen broth, and it’s one of those moments when I think, "Ah, I’m back in Wakayama…" (laughs).
I love this place, so I plan to stop by again the next time I return to Wakayama.
