I was on the hunt for a place in Gotanda where I could enjoy delicious soba along with drinks, and I found this spot.
It's an izakaya run by a soba restaurant called Chirin from Musashi-Koyama.
Reservations are required for groups of four or more, but they offer all-you-can-drink options including 15 to 18 varieties of Japanese sake. The selection changes occasionally, but there were plenty of options, including Tadasake on this particular day.
Unlike other all-you-can-drink places, you can enjoy as much premium sake as you'd like here. That's why I tend to drink too much! (laughs) Just a heads-up, same-day requests for all-you-can-drink aren’t accepted.
I've been here several times a month and never get tired of it.
Everything I’ve tried has been delicious.
I always make sure to order the marinated mackerel and watercress potato salad—it's a true favorite of mine.
This time, I decided to try something different and ordered the Koronuki, which is essentially soba-less. It’s like a croquette soba but without the noodles.
It comes with piping hot croquettes served in a generous amount of soba dipping sauce and wakame, and it is absolutely amazing!
Being a soba restaurant, dishes that are infused with dashi are superb.
I particularly recommend the dashi omelet and stewed dishes.
And the duck hot pot is exquisite.
It’s filled with plenty of duck meat, and the vegetables are sometimes the freshest ones available.
When you add soba as a finish, it creates a rich duck nanban soba experience. (I didn't eat it this time, though! (laughs))
You can enjoy a course that includes this duck hot pot for just JPY 2800, which is quite a bargain.
On this day, I finished with warm soba topped with chicken and green onions.
The noodles were perfectly textured with a firm bite. The soba here is truly fantastic.
Although it’s a bit of a walk from Gotanda Station and located off the main street, it has a casual vibe that makes it easy to drop in unexpectedly.
