I discovered this place while searching for a restaurant near Ochanomizu that accepts reservations, rather than an izakaya.
I visited on a weekday at 7 PM, and there were a few regulars scattered around. Other groups coming from work and families were also coming and going, but it wasn’t crowded, creating a relaxed atmosphere.
The menu featured a wide variety of mapo tofu, including red, black, white, green, roasted garlic, and yuzu pepper—some I had never seen before!
We were a party of three and ordered:
- Red (3 spicy)
- Black
- Roasted garlic
Plus, we added:
- Pickled mustard greens rice
- Seafood shumai
Our dishes arrived in just about 5 minutes!
The bubbling mapo tofu had an enticing aroma that was very impactful!
I tasted all of them, and the red was the mildest! The 3 spicy is said to be the normal level, but for those who can handle more heat, you can choose from levels above 10 for a challenge!
The garlic aroma really whetted my appetite and made the rice go down easily!
The black version was rich and almost as thick as curry! It had a strong kick from the pepper and Sichuan peppercorns, giving it a numbing sensation. Eating mapo tofu in winter while sweating was incredibly delicious.
We had a lot of rice, but our appetites were heightened, so we ordered the shumai as well!
The shrimp and scallops were plentiful and satisfying!
And for dessert, we had almond tofu!
My friend added hojicha sauce on top, but I went with the regular version.
It was mild with a perfect sweetness! Even though I was full, I finished it in no time.
Everything was delicious, and with so many menu options, I definitely want to come back!
