On this day, I stayed in Uji, Kyoto for a business trip.
Finishing work earlier than planned, I thought I would enjoy a drink alone before meeting up with a friend, so I strolled around the Uji Station area.
While walking, I discovered a bright little restaurant that seemed to be an independent shop.
Getting closer, I saw that tempura was their specialty, so as a fan of tempura, I didn’t hesitate to step in (laughs).
Feeling the spacious and comfortable seating arrangement, I took a seat at the counter.
I quickly ordered a draft beer while browsing the menu.
Ordering tempura here is fun; similar to sushi restaurants, you can write down your favorite items and quantities on an order sheet.
There were so many options on the order sheet, plus today’s recommended tempura was listed on a blackboard, making it hard to decide.
I ordered the classic shrimp and anago, along with the recommended shirako and hamo, and also opted for a sashimi platter and the unique "Ikura with Mascarpone."
The "Ikura with Mascarpone" arrived first; it consists of cucumber topped with mascarpone and ikura.
It was delicious! The combination of traditional and Western flavors created a harmonious taste in my mouth.
This called for some Japanese sake! I decided to indulge in some sake that I've been trying to avoid lately.
There are about ten types of sake available, all of which have been carefully selected by the owner.
Especially for the sake called "Souku," they mentioned it’s a super rare find, only one bottle can be procured per month!
The sashimi featuring fat tuna was incredibly delicious, highlighting the quality of the ingredients.
Then the main dish, the tempura, arrived!
The shrimp was plump and crispy, best enjoyed with salt!
The anago was fluffy and delicious with no unpleasant odor!
The shirako had a rich, gooey flavor that paired perfectly with the sake!
And the soft-boiled egg tempura was simply amazing! When I dipped the runny yolk onto the other tempura, the richness intensified—it was irresistible!
While enjoying this solo drinking experience, I heard cheerful voices from the second floor, where a banquet was taking place, apparently a reserved seating event.
Additionally, I got friendly with a man who came alone from Kyushu sitting next to me, which is one of the joys of sitting at the counter.
The tables accommodate various sizes, from two to six people, making it a very convenient izakaya.
I left the restaurant feeling uplifted by the friendly character of the owner!
Thank you, Chouji, for the wonderful meal!
