Last spring, I visited a bar called "Stand HERO," which opened near Yodo Station, the closest station to Kyoto Racecourse, with my wife.
The interior is compact, filling up with about ten people, and while it’s called a stand, there are chairs at the counter as well.
We started with a toast over a "Draft Beer (Kirin)" (JPY 480), refreshing our dry throats as we ordered some dishes.
"Yokowa Sashimi" (JPY 700)
We could choose between sweet soy sauce and tamari soy sauce, and the freshness of the Yokowa was excellent, cut thick for a satisfying bite.
"Garlic Salt Fried Chicken" (JPY 600)
The chicken thigh was lightly battered and fried, with a nice garlic flavor, and it was enjoyed with a squeeze of lemon.
"Kushi Katsu" (JPY 100 each)
With fine breadcrumbs, the pork was rich in fat and flavor, the shrimp had a nice bounce, and the squid was tender and easy to chew.
"Shirasu Daikon" (JPY 300)
A simple dish of grated radish topped with shirasu and soy sauce, perfect as a side for Japanese sake.
"Thick Shiitake Butter" (JPY 500)
These thick shiitake mushrooms were sautéed in butter; it’s a simple dish, but the ingredient's flavor and butter aroma shone through.
The sake selection was relatively generous, so I ordered "Sakuteki" from Tama no Hikari Brewery (JPY 550), which was very smooth with a delightful rice flavor, making it a truly enjoyable drink.
