Not just Instagram-worthy! You'll definitely be satisfied with the delicious food and extensive drink options at "Sumibi to Wine" in Karasuma, Kyoto!
After a while, I found myself back in Kyoto for a toast with meat and wine!
I visited "Sumibi to Wine," a popular bar with locations in Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo. This is my second visit, having previously been to the Kyobashi branch a few years back. This time, I headed to the Kyoto store that opened in July this year, which features the theme of blending Japanese and Western styles, along with the sub-name "HANARE."
Just a few minutes' walk from Karasuma Station, a narrow alley leads to the prominently displayed "Sumi" sign brightly shining through the darkness.
As soon as you step inside, the entrance has a beautiful Japanese-style decor.
To the side, a staircase leads to the second floor.
On the first floor, there's a high-stool drink counter at the front, with counters facing the kitchen and table seating in the back.
In the farthest corner, there's even a tatami mat room like the "Ooku"!
At the table seating in the main area, the wall-side seats are adorned with tatami mats—very Kyoto-like, and they are quite comfortable to sit on.
The table is beautifully set with side plates, cutlery, and wet towels, showcasing attention to detail.
The menu is available in a handy booklet. True to its name, the focus is on grilled dishes and wine. The drink options are plentiful, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic selections, catering to everyone’s enjoyment.
First, let's raise a glass with draft beer! However, I ordered the premium all-you-can-drink option for JPY 2100. You can drink everything marked on the menu, including bottle wine, with unlimited time! Amazing! They open at 5 PM on weekdays and 4 PM on weekends and holidays, offering up to 9 hours of all-you-can-drink!? Incredible! Though, it's unlikely you'll find anyone to stay that long, haha.
For the appetizer price of JPY 400, it’s not just a trivial item, but a baby leaf salad available for unlimited refills! Yay! …In the end, I refilled my drinks 5 to 6 times, so I got my money's worth easily (laughs).
Their homemade dressing is also popular among fans.
Next up, let’s taste the chicken teriyaki sushi for JPY 300 each.
The presentation is tantalizing!
I wanted to savor each bite separately, but I did as instructed and popped it in my mouth!
The tender duck melts in your mouth paired with the rich and milky uni. It was absolutely delightful! The saltiness and flavor of the Korean seaweed were a perfect match. Starting off with a strong flavor—I couldn't resist wanting another piece...!
Grilled meat tataki platter for JPY 980
Here comes another photo-worthy dish! It’s super rare! Simply irresistible!
Melt-in-your-mouth, fatty Bungo beef,
and the bouncy, flavorful Kanmuri chicken.
The red and white separate textures of the juicy kawachi duck is also superb!
I started simply with wasabi, and then ventured to the various spices provided.
Such perfectly rare meat is a show of confidence. The quality for just JPY 980 is impressive!
Drink red wine with the meat. Since it’s all-you-can-drink!
Next is the local seafood carpaccio for JPY 980, following the meat dish, and it also looks great!
Tuna, Yellowtail, Spanish mackerel, and Sea bass.
You can also use various spices. Eating it as sashimi is good, but carpaccio gives a nice twist. It’s both delicious and enjoyable.
Cordial sour <Super Fruits>
A drink that uses herbal extracts and concentrated fruit juice, believed to be good for health, this cordial sour is something I wouldn't usually order. But, since it’s all-you-can-drink, I'll give it a try. It's refreshing and goes down easily—seems healthy!
Ice Candy Sangria <Passion> for JPY 590.
My friend also tried various experiments. Just as the name suggests, it comes with ice candy inside. It’s definitely a girl’s favorite.
French Fries S for JPY 480
I wondered why I’d order fries with so many options available, but these were surprisingly tasty! Crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle—just the right density so they don't get stuck in my throat (laughs)! I found myself reaching for more, it was really worth ordering.
Crab Cream Croquette for JPY 580
Crispy and fluffy, it’s packed full of crab flavor! So delightful! It had me smiling!
Back to the reliable red wine.
Green Beer
Beer mixed with tea. A unique Kyoto touch. I thought it was odd, but it was surprisingly good.
Almond Tea
Also unexpectedly delicious! The almond flavor is prominent! It has a bit of an alcohol taste too. But sweet and smooth. I was thrilled to try various drinks in this all-you-can-drink offer.
Loin Slice Steak “Smoked” for JPY 1880
For today’s main, I opted for meat! It’s beautiful—pure meat art on a plate.
Crispy on the outside, medium rare inside! Tender, juicy meat!
Juices burst forth with each bite! The flavor of the meat combined with the subtle hint of smokiness was irresistible! This was definitely worth it. Delicious!
To cleanse the palate, a highball to drink.
Fresh Uni and Bacon Carbonara Pappardelle for JPY 1200
Fresh pasta made by a long-established noodle maker with 100 years of history.
Just look at the width when you lift it up! It’s so tender and chewy! It’s amazing! The creamy and rich sauce coated it perfectly, making it delicious! I’m glad I chose this.
Catalana for JPY 500
Let’s move on to dessert. It’s like a pudding ice cream topped with plenty of fragrant nuts.
Pumpkin Ricotta Cheesecake for JPY 600.
It’s incredibly hefty!
Dense and sticky. The pumpkin flavor is rich. It’s quite filling.
Muscatel
Ending with a high-alcohol dessert liquor to sip on. It was a great meal!
From the restaurant's appearance to the atmosphere, the lineup of drinks and dishes, their visuals and flavors, down to the prices, I was extremely satisfied! What a delightful experience!
The Kyoto-style ambiance surely delights both locals and visitors from other regions, including foreigners. I highly recommend it for girls' parties, dates, or a stylish and delicious outing!
