The deliciousness of the broth, the moderate tartness of the ume, and the crunchy texture of the za sai make this a perfect accompaniment to drinks and a great palate cleanser, so I'd suggest ordering a plate to have on hand for snacking!

Of course, since I was at Kiyoken, I had to enjoy some Shumai♡ This assortment includes four varieties: the traditional shumai, special shumai, prawn shumai, and crab shumai. You can choose from various options: 1 piece (total 4), 2 pieces (total 8), or 3 pieces (total 12). Served in a large steamer, it’s so nice to eat them hot! The "special shumai" is larger, softer, and rich in flavor compared to the traditional type. Personally, I prefer the "traditional shumai" when eaten cold and the "special shumai" when steamed (and I tend to enjoy eating cold shumai!). The crab shumai is made with snow crab, giving it a rich crab flavor, and the prawn shumai offers a delightful shrimp texture. It’s fantastic to try these two unique flavors that I don’t usually buy!
I really wanted to pair my shumai with rice, and though it wasn't on the menu, I asked and they had some available, so I ordered some white rice too! I just love Kiyoken's shumai♡♡
【Porchetta】 JPY 1780
Porchetta is a traditional Italian roast pork dish. The pork has its bones removed and is stuffed with garlic and rosemary before being roasted. This version features porchetta stuffed with "mochi rice risotto." I was curious about how that would taste, and it turns out to be a swirl of rich pork belly meat with creamy risotto in the middle. Trying it with the fat… wow!! This is DELICIOUS!! The umami from the fat melts in your mouth♡ The meat is well-seasoned with rosemary and pepper, creating a bright flavor while being adequately salty—perfect for pairing with drinks!! The meat itself is tender.
I was impressed that Kiyoken even makes traditional Italian cuisine. It wasn’t in the printed menu but found in the laminated one, so this might be a limited-time offering, but it’s definitely a dish to try if you get the chance.

These traditional shumai are grilled on a hot plate. Interestingly, I’ve never had any Kiyoken shumai variants, so this was my first experience with grilled shumai. The crispy texture makes them taste fantastic! And the sauce on the side is a cheese sauce…! Dipping grilled shumai into the melty cheese sauce was a heavenly experience! It’s completely different from regular shumai!! The cheese was smooth and rich… so delicious!!
【Sichuan-style Mapo Tofu】 JPY 980
Given the Sichuan title, I expected it to be quite spicy, but the heat was surprisingly mild. It might disappoint those who love spicy food, but perhaps it’s been adjusted for younger diners. It arrived sizzling in a hot pot. I poured it over the leftover rice♡ While the spice level was moderate, the Sichuan pepper provided a nice numbing sensation!
I was able to enjoy every dish at Kiyoken; everything was so delicious! I’d especially recommend the "Ume-Za Sai," "Crispy Gyoza," and "Porchetta." Oh, and if you love Shumai, the assortment is a must-try!
The tables are spacious and comfortable, allowing for a relaxed dining experience. Next time, I definitely want to indulge in an all-you-can-eat Shumai lunch buffet! It was an amazing meal, thank you!
