A list of non-systemd distributions (revisited)

Inspired by, but not fully agreeing with without-systemd and their list of distributions,  we began editing our own.  Hopefully we can keep up the pace and discover new additions but we honor suggestions and contributions from others.  We also have a new (10/07/2020) linux only list of distributions without systemd as init with a summary description and link to their site, then we created the strict list of distributions not using elogind at all or distros that make it possible to run a wm on X or wayland without using elogind.

New Obarun iso images – minimal and JWM

Obarun is trully Arch-Linux without systemd.  It has come with a minimalist window manager since its inception more than 3 years ago.  In the past 2 years with JWM and originally with OpenBox, hence the OB in the original name.

Since early September Obarun comes with a minimal no-X image as well, that is about 1/2 a GB in size.  The latest one is the minimal iso that came out October 2nd Obarun_x86_64-2018-10.iso w/ md5sum…  which will be updated at the beginning of each month.

What is a distro – anyway?

After some puzzling evidence in trying to revise a list of non-systemd init distributions, forks, clones, derivatives, and “retouches” in which FigOS didn’t seem to be easily admitted, and in our quest to come up with explicit guidelines of what is what on the list, and….. since we are not developers and/or distro publishers ourselves, we decided to get some guidance of someone who has published a complete operating system himself what he thinks.  Let’s see what he has to say about it.

 

What is a Distro? (by FigOSdev)

Defining a distro in a technical way is probably useful, if it can be done accurately. For non-technical people, I explain that a distro is:
“Like the’ make and model’ of a car– except that it can replace all the software on your computer.”
