Dans le cadre du colloque GATE HiSoMA “Constitution mixte : généalogie d’un idée” (9-11 juillet 2019, Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne) Alberto Esu (University of Edinburgh) présentera une communication intitulée ““The Many”, the Democracy, and the Mixed Constitution: Greek Popular Assemblies in Polybius”, dont voici un résumé des grandes lignes par l’intervenant.
This paper will discuss Aristotle’s theory of the socio-economic and institutional ‘parts of the city’ vis-à-vis Polybius’ model of mixed constitution in order to trace continuities and differences between the two models. Building on this theoretical background, the paper will then explore the significance of the expressions ‘hoi polloi’ (vel sim.) in Polybius’ accounts of political decision-making and of the workings of the relevant institutions in the political structure of Greek democracies and of the Roman constitution.
