Workplace DEI Guides & Activities

In most companies, EDI work doesn’t focus on just one issue. It might involve tackling unconscious bias in hiring, supporting employee resource groups, building psychologically safe teams, or helping leaders adopt more inclusive behaviors. The guides above provide some examples you can use in your own training sessions.

These resources are developed by Dr Valeria Lo Iacono (PhD, Sociology), an experienced university educator, and Dr Paul Symonds, who works in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and specializes in practical workplace training design.

Glossary of Key EDI & Inclusion Terms

Belonging at Work
This goes beyond just being included. It’s the feeling that you truly fit in, are respected, and can be your authentic self at work. Belonging helps reduce turnover and increases employee engagement.

Psychological Safety
A work environment where people feel comfortable expressing ideas, asking questions, or admitting mistakes without fear of embarrassment or backlash. It’s the foundation for honest dialogue and inclusive teamwork.

Intersectionality
A way of understanding how overlapping identities, such as gender, race, age, or disability, shape a person’s experiences. It’s especially useful in DEI training to highlight how privilege and discrimination can combine in complex ways.

Inclusive Language
Words and phrases that respect diverse identities and avoid assumptions or bias. For example, using “partner” instead of assuming gender, or avoiding idioms that exclude neurodivergent individuals.

Employee Inclusion Surveys
Anonymous tools used to gather feedback on how inclusive your workplace feels. They help track progress, spot issues early, and guide decisions about training and policy.

FAQs

How can EDI training improve my team’s performance?

When employees feel seen, heard, and valued, they’re more engaged and productive. EDI training helps tackle bias, builds empathy, and encourages collaboration across all levels of a company.

Is there a difference between equity and equality?

Yes. Equality means treating everyone the same. Equity is about offering tailored support so all employees have an equal chance to succeed.

What’s a good way to start EDI efforts in my organization?
