Swayam is a feminist organisation committed to advancing women's rights and ending inequality and violence against women and girls. On the one hand we facilitate the empowerment of women survivors of violence and enable them to become self-confident, self-sufficient and self-reliant. On the other, we generate discussion, debate and action in society to challenge social norms, values and systems that deem discrimination and violence against women and girls acceptable.
Gender Based Online Violence
Gender Based Online Violence happens when people use digital tools or online spaces to harm others based on their gender – especially women, queer and other marginalized persons. It means using technology like mobile phones, social media, messaging applications or the internet to harm, silence or control. In simple terms, it is a modern form of abuse.

JUST RELEASED: The Natal Family: A Neglected Site of Domestic Violence Against Women: An Exploratory Study

This exploratory study foregrounds the largely invisible issue of natal family violence (NFV) in India, exploring its forms, prevalence, and deep, long-term impacts on women's lives. It challenges the myth of the natal home as a safe space and centres survivor voices and lived experiences.
Swayam completes its 30 years journey
Being a 30-year-old feminist organisation means embodying solidarity, empathy, and collective strength.
It means building spaces where people come together, supporting one another through the hardest moments, growing together, and continuing to hold each other in memory and spirit—even years after they may move on.

Swayam completes its 30 years journey being an integral part of the Women's Movement of India, holding hands with the women it works with, friends and well-wishers. We have seen many ups and downs in the journey and have been able to achieve our goals only because of your trust, support, and love. You have been with us as compassionate, inspirational co-travelers. We cherish our friendship; long live feminism!

Resource Directories for women
Women and children who experience violence and discrimination need a variety of support services, particularly in crisis situations. However more often than not, they do not know whom they can approach for help. There are numerous organizations in Kolkata that provide these services but information about them is not easily available and tends to be limited. The Women’s Resource Directories bridge this gap by bringing together information about the availability of these services in a handy format that women and children can keep with themselves at all times.
Violence Facts & Figures
Global estimates published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicate that “about 1 in 3 (35%) of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.”
Building Violence Free Communities
Creating social condemnation against violence on women is one the most effective ways of preventing it. Swayam has been working consistently to establish gender-just and violence-free communities in a few rural and urban areas, in collaboration with local community members, CBOs, NGOs and the government machinery. Swayam’s aim is to facilitate the creation of pro active groups of women and girls, men and boys and equip them to address and prevent violence against women in their communities, with the ultimate objective of creating communities where women are free from violence.
