And it certainly has been since my last blog post. Let’s do some catching up, OK?
Let me think…. <<ponders, with index finger pressed to bottom lip>>
Well, I guess the first new thing was that I graduated in October 2015! BA (Hons) in Humanities with English Language. The ceremony was in Edinburgh’s Usher Halls where, about half a century before, I’d heard The Rolling Stones!
The family was there to cheer me on.

What a wonderful day it was! I was so touched by their pride in me! Quite weepy, in fact. On the stage, as we waited for things to kick off, there were screens showing tweets about the graduands. And lo and behold, up came a message for his ‘witty and wise’ mother, from Johnny! <<snuffle>>
And Jenny posted on Facebook:
“Today my incredibly clever mother, Penny Veitch, who taught both me and my older brother until we went on to university, graduates with BA Honours in Arts and Humanities from the Open University! I am incredibly proud of her, and am so glad that her intelligence is getting a formal recognition!” <<sniffle>>
I love my babies!!!!!!!!

And it goes without saying that John was very proud of me, too….

These wee people weren’t so interested, of course, but slept through the whole proceedings!
And this brings me to something else that has happened since you saw me last. Our darling Susie, at thirteen years old, developed a tumour on her spine and died a few months ago. She was sweet, loving, pretty and very, very kind to all the young animals who joined our family, and we miss her. She could also fit herself into the smallest of containers!
Gaining a degree before I was 70 had been something on my long-term To Do list, and I made it with just over a year to spare, so that was good!
You noticed that word ‘list’? Well, a different title that I swithered over for this blog post was ‘I’ve Got A Lot of Lists’. Because I do. And today, dear friends, we are joined here together to talk about my love of bullet journal lists, which is another development since I last spoke to you. I, of course, embellish the original, quite minimalist, approach…
I’ve always made them: shopping lists, of course, but also to-do lists, book lists, lists of recipes to try, present lists, films I want to see… You know the sort of thing. My lists have been made on scraps of paper, in notebooks, on blackboards… And then I found bullet journaling! Right up my street! So now I have everything (except shopping lists, but I made a print-out for the fridge for them)

in my bullet journals! Being me, of course, I’ve started a Facebook group: Bullet Journaling for Vegans
(I should make a list of all the Facebook groups I’ve started, actually… )
Anyway, here are some of the lists in my bullet journal:
This is where I show all the books I have on the go at the moment, colour-coded by genre. I thought showing the key as cross-stitch pictures on the wall above the bookcase was quite cute, and I claim full credit for the idea! 😀

These are spreads for my Scottish Vegans potlucks from last year and this. Keeps me right, so that I don’t duplicate anything!

Sometimes, despite having, literally, many dozens of recipe books, you just can’t think of what to use something for…

And I’ve made a spread for recipes I want to try, and their source. Another work in progress!

This is my master weekly list, for planning and for looking back on. And for keeping track of how I’m doing on the housework and healthy eating front…

More detailed lists, with the weather each day (this is Scotland, so I’m using a lot of grey pencil at the moment, with the occasional wee coloured umbrella to cheer up the page, if not the skies…) Also, a space for that day’s appointments or, more usually, some washi tape. I lead a very quiet life…

Jenny is now a fan and has her own bullet journals. We have a lot of fun, comparing what we’re doing! And Johnny is planning on having one, too.
This is where I work on my bullet journal (excuse the mess. I decided to get on with this, rather than tidy up for the photo…) It’s under the stairs which lead up from the sitting room, against what was, originally, the back wall of the 18th century cottage.

And I usually have these wee souls for company… (Those are some of my 70th birthday cards hanging on the bookshelves. Something else that has happened since we last met…)

People have always made lists, of course, and I always enjoy scenes in books where a character makes or consults a list! In Jan Struther’s Try Anything Twice,

a collection of essays and sketches, she devotes a whole short essay to list-making and address books. Wonderful! Just read this first page of ‘Ainsworth – Zazoulian’!

Oh, Joyce! (Her real name.) You would sooo be using and blogging about bullet journals!
And so to cookery corner…
Here’s a recipe, slightly adapted from one my friend Pamela gave me, with a fairly long list of ingredients, but which is quite easy to make!
By the way, don’t be put off by long lists! (As long as you have everything on it, of course, or a suitable substitute! I have to admit to sometimes starting a recipe and then, in a flurry of bad language, realising that I’m missing something vital. My advice – check all the ingredients first!!! I’ll take that advice one of these days……..)
Ingredients:
350g plain white flour
1 tsp. mixed spice
175g margarine
175g soft brown sugar
1 tablespoon molasses
500+g dried fruit (I use sultanas, currants, raisins and mixed peel)
100g glace cherries
50g flaked almonds (optional)
2 tablespoons ground almonds
150ml soya milk
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
¼ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
Method:
Mix flour and spice
Rub in marg, until breadcrumb-like
Mix in sugar, molasses, fruit and nuts
Mix bicarb of soda with half of the milk (roughly, don’t worry about exact fractions!)
Heat the rest of the milk until warm
Add vinegar (it’ll froth up)
Mix it all together (should be pretty thick)
Place into a deep, lined cake tin and smooth over the top to make it flat
Cover with foil
Bake at 150o Fan for 2½ hours
Once you’ve got all the ingredients together,

it really doesn’t take too long at all! It’s a lovely, moist Christmas cake, but also a very nice fruit cake, sans marzipan and icing.
Ok, I’m now going to float a wee idea past you all. Another possible title for this post was ‘If you could see me now!’
No, I’m not referring to the amount of weight I’ve put on since I started working on my degree. (I found a LOT of chocolate essential to afternoon studying…) I’m referring to this idea – would you LIKE to see me now? I’ve been wondering about trying a vlog (video blog) for a wee while now, and when my friend, Diane, told me that it’s possible to make some money from vlogging (always a consideration in this strapped-for-cash household), that spurred me on!
Johnny, who’s into film-making, would be my main cameraman. I’m keen to give this a go and I’d love to hear what you think. I’d be including our home; family (that includes the cats and dogs, of course!); garden; town; local places of interest; cooking and baking; mixed media art… Oh, and my bullet journal! I will, of course, be starting a new journal specifically for planning it…
Today’s title(s):
Oh, it’s a long, long time, from May to September (‘September Song’ from the Broadway show ‘Knickerbocker Holiday’ (1938) Lyrics by Maxwell Anderson)
I’ve got a little list (from ‘The Mikado’ (1885) Lyrics by W. S. Gilbert)
If they could see me now (from ‘Sweet Charity’ (1966) Lyrics by Dorothy Field)
