Eleanor Robinson
I am in my second year of a PhD at the University of Sussex, studying part-time, supervised by Professor Lindsay Smith. My thesis is on photography and the Victorian supernatural. Specifically, I am looking at how photography influenced spiritualism and the supernatural, and how that influence manifested itself within the Victorian/Edwardian ghost story.
Prior to that, I completed a Masters in Victorian Studies at Birkbeck, University of London between 2009 and 2011, achieving a Distinction. My dissertation was based on ‘magic portrait’ supernatural fiction. During my MA studies, I wrote essays on Victorian art, visual culture and the novel, and spiritualism. I also delivered a paper on imperialism and spiritualism for a conference at Leeds Trinity in March 2012, which was published in a collection called 'Victorian Spiritualities', ed. Jane de Gay (Leeds: Leeds Trinity University College/Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies, 2012).
Before that I studied English Language and Literature at Somerville College, Oxford University, graduating with a first in 2003.
After completing my degree, I trained to be a lawyer, obtaining the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course certificate between 2003 and 2005. I completed my training contract at Allen & Overy LLP in 2006 and am continuing to work part-time as a lawyer for the Financial Services Authority (now Financial Conduct Authority).
My research interests focus on Victorian spiritualism, photography, spirit photography, visual culture, art and psychology.
Along with Treena Warren, Mike Rowland and Catherine Pope of Sussex University, I am organising am interdisciplinary conference to take place on 19 June 2014 called ‘Sights and Frights: Victorian visual culture, horror and the supernatural’ (www.sightsandfrights.com).
