How does WebWork calculate activity levels?

Activity Level shows how actively a team member is using their computer during tracked time. WebWork measures three types of input (keyboard strokes, mouse clicks, and scroll actions) and converts them into an easy-to-read percentage from 0% to 100%.

How is Activity Level Calculated?

WebWork uses a two-factor formula that considers both input intensity and active time:

Activity % = Input Score × Active Time Ratio

All input actions are first summed up — keyboard strokes, mouse clicks, and scroll actions combined. Then active minutes are determined by subtracting inactive minutes (time within a tracked interval where no input was detected) from total tracked minutes. From there, input intensity is calculated by dividing total actions by active minutes, giving the average actions per active minute. The Input Score is then calculated by dividing actions per active minute by the Normative Value and multiplying by 100, capped at 100%. The Active Time Ratio is simply active minutes divided by total tracked minutes. The final Activity % is the Input Score multiplied by the Active Time Ratio, capped at 100%.

In previous versions, activity was calculated by dividing total actions by total tracked minutes. This meant that a person who worked intensely for 2 minutes but was inactive for 8 minutes within a 10-minute interval could still show high activity. Now, WebWork separates how intensely you work from how much of the time you are actually working, giving a more accurate picture of real engagement.

What is Activity Sensitivity?

Activity Sensitivity is a setting that controls how strictly WebWork measures activity. It determines the Normative Value — the baseline number of actions per active minute that represents 100% input intensity. There are three sensitivity levels: Relaxed (25 actions/min), Normal (50 actions/min), and Strict (100 actions/min). The lower the sensitivity, the easier it is to achieve higher activity percentages. Relaxed is best for roles with less constant typing or clicking, such as designers, managers, or researchers. Normal is suitable for most office and knowledge work roles. Strict is best for roles with constant data entry or high-frequency computer use.

Activity Level Categories

Activity Level is displayed using three color-coded categories. By default, anything below 30% is considered Low and shown in red, 30% to 60% is Medium shown in yellow, and above 60% is High shown in green. These thresholds are customizable via the Activity Level Range setting in Settings.

Configuration

To configure Activity Sensitivity, go to Settings Productivity, select one of the three sensitivity levels under Activity Sensitivity, and optionally adjust the Activity Level Range slider to customize the Low/Medium/High thresholds. Sensitivity can also be configured per user, allowing different thresholds for different roles.
