The Second Conference on Law and Religion in Africa was held at Stellenbosch University (South Af... more The Second Conference on Law and Religion in Africa was held at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) from 26 to 28 May 2014. Some 60 scholars, legal professionals, and religious leaders from 15 countries particpated in this conference, focusing on the theme "Law and Religion in Africa: The Quest for the Common Good in Pluralistic Societies." Essays in this collection address: (1) Philosophy, Law, and Religion, (2) Church and State in South Africa, (3) Islam and Law in Sub-Saharan Africa, (4) Marriage, Education, and Employment, and (5) Religion, State, and Society. The volume will also feature essays by retired South African Constitutional Court Justice Albie Sachs and current Chief Justice of the South African Constitutional Court Mogoeng wa Mogoeng.
The discussion of the relationship between law and religion, as seen from a variety of perspectives in Africa, underscores the critical importance of the issues involved in the everyday life of all citizens. It is accordingly vital for governments to take note of the scholarly results that are produced. We hope that this volume will contribute to this aim.

Reconsidering “bevinding” in KH Miskotte Given the world-wide growth in interest in mystical or contemplative spirituality – also amongst Reformed Christians – this article asks what constitutes authentic mysticism in light of 20th-century corrections and retrievals of definitions of this phenomenon as reflected in the widely accepted definition of mysticism by Bernard McGinn. The similarities and differences between mysticism in this sense and Dutch theologian Kornelius Miskotte’s term “bevinding” is investigated as amounting to mysticism while retaining characteristic Reformed emphases.

Trustees include Dr Welile Mazamisa, Archbishop Dr Thabo Makgoba, Dr André van Niekerk, Prof. Nico Koopman and Dr Renier Koegelenberg. It consists of a unique network of participating institutions: representatives of the Faculties of Theology and the Departments of Religious Studies of the Universities in the Western Cape are represented on the Board and Executive of the EFSA Institute. Generally speaking, the EFSA Institute attempts to promote consensus between different sectors, interest groups and stakeholders on the challenges and problems facing our society. It strives to play a facilitating role by providing a platform for public debate, even of controversial issues. Both in its structure and function there is a dialectic tension between an academic (research-based) approach and the need to address specific needs of the church and other religious communities. This tension is embedded in the main issues facing the churches in our society. In a general sense the EFSA Institute tries to focus public attention (and the attention of the church or academic institutions) on specific problems in society. Currently, the focus is on the following priorities.

This paper attempts to identify some ethical dimensions in the preaching of Beyers Naudé, as bein... more This paper attempts to identify some ethical dimensions in the preaching of Beyers Naudé, as being representative of a structural-contextual-ethical mode of moral discourse. Cognisance is taken in particular of sermons preached shortly before the first general elections were held in South Africa, and sermons preached in the aftermath of this historical event. This is done to determine whether any fundamental changes took place in Naude's thinking on justice during these times of transition. A brief discussion of different theological discourses on restorative justice in South Africa is given. The paper concludes with some observations on the continuous relevance of Naudé for the current debate on restorative justice in South Africa.
