Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ahmed Bakr Khayat acts as Chair for Architectural Engineering and Sustainability program at University of Kurdistan – Hawler and an associate researcher at the French institute for the near east (Ifpo), He was Director of SU. TIU joint M.Sc. Arch. program (2017-2019), he acted as head of Department of Architecture at Salahddin University (2013 - 2018), he was cofounder of post graduate MSC. and PHD programs in his department, and a cofounder of Erbil forum for sustainable development. He was the founder of Mahmood khayat architects (1990) and Arbil engineering company ( 2004) in Baghdad He acted as a visiting Professor for limited periods at Local universities (of Sulaimania, Dohuk, Koya, Gihan, Ishik, American University at Dohuk and University of Kurdistan - Hawler ), in 2019 he was awarded the title of IFPO associate researcher.
Dr. Khayat has published articles acted as a speaker in several local and international conferences and events, Examined and supervised PhD. And M.Sc. local students and co-supervised and examined one M.A. Student at Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus-Germany, His research concentrated on sustainable preservation of built heritage and defining the vocabulary and grammars of the local Architecture language, this was adopted as a theme of design by making use of perception laws in re-calling the architectural vocabulary saved in the deep mental data storage to create an Environment Friend Architecture that can communicate with the audience.

Architectural heritage is the cultural and civilizational achievements that man inherited from hi... more Architectural heritage is the cultural and civilizational achievements that man inherited from his ancestors, acquiring a qualitative value that has proven its importance and originality in resisting the forces of change. It is becoming a visual reference. The architectural heritage has been exposed to natural and human factors that caused much damage. This requests to deal with these factors at every level through joint action, which includes the maintenance and protection of heritage buildings. One of the essential parts of the preservation process is the reuse of the building, whereby an actual or new function is given to the building to preserve, sustain and reconfigure it in a way that preserves its originality, composition, and balance without compromising its relationship with the environment. The research problem is the fragile focus on the importance of functional value when starting the architectural preservation work, even though it requires an in-depth study of the extent of the impact of this change on preserving the heritage value of the building. The study aims to clarify the process of preservation in heritage buildings and the use of the rehabilitation process based on the architectural characteristics of the building. For this purpose, the analytical method approach of pre-and post-conservation blueprints was used through photographs to illustrate the impact of functional change in preserving the building's heritage value. The new role can introduce new values, such as political, historical, or social, to satisfy the needs of the new structure.
