Magnus Ullén ([email protected]) is Professor of English at Stockholm University, Sweden. He is the author of The Half-Vanished Structure: Hawthorne’s Allegorical Dialectics (2004), and Bara för dig: pornografi, konsumtion, berättande (“Just for you: pornography, consumption, narrative”) (2009), a study on pornography and narrativity in consumer society. His articles on literary theory, American literature, pornography, and the concept of political correctness have appeared in New Literary History, Studies in the Novel, Jump Cut, Tulsa Studies in Women’s Literature, Applied Linguistics, College Literature, ESQ, and many other journals.

Teratologen, Literary Criticism, and the Literary Commodity The present article takes as its point of departure the debate that ensued when anti-racist magazine Expo revealed that Swedish writer Niklas Lundkvist (a.k.a. ”Nikanor Teratologen”) over several years as ”Ezzelino” had published massive amounts of racist and anti-semitic writings in an online forum. The article suggests that Ezzelino’s ideological stance is in fact detectable in Teratologen’s critically acclaimed literary works as well, and asks why Swedish literary critics have been prone to read the latter as an anti-fascist parody of fascist ideology rather than as an attempt to promote fascist views by rendering them aesthetically acceptable. It traces this inclination to the critics’ adherence to a Barthesian conception of textuality, which delivers the critic from having to think of the author as the historical origin of the literary text. 'Triangulation,' the American Heritage Dictionary informs us, is "the establishment of a politica... more 'Triangulation,' the American Heritage Dictionary informs us, is "the establishment of a political position that differs from two existing or opposing positions, especially in being moderate." In politics, in other words, it names a practice that seeks to persuade by minimizing the differences between two choices. In the academy, in contrast, it has increasingly come to be seen as a term promising an escape from the suffocating tyranny of all kinds of binaries. As such a positively loaded term, "triangulation" figures prominently in Jeanne Cortiel's With a Barbarous Din: Race and Ethnic Encounter in Mid-Nineteenth-Century American Literature. By introducing "ethnicity" into the study of representations of racial relations in midnineteenth-century American literature, Cortiel wants to enable "a reading of nineteenth-century American literature that looks beyond Anglo-Saxon monoculturalism and the bipolarity of a slavery-based race system" (15). To that end, she offers readings of five different texts published around 1855: Herman Melville's "Benito Cereno," Frederick Douglass's My Bondage and My Freedom, Harriet Beecher Stowe's second anti-slavery novel Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp, the first edition of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, and finally John Rollin Ridge's The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta, the Celebrated California Bandit. These are very different texts, but Cortiel highlights their similarity rather than their singularity: all "engage with contemporary delimitations of 'race' but also find ways to transcend their terms" (32). More specifically, her method, Cortiel declares, is that "of reading ahistorically through the structural opposition between race and ethnicity" (34). In practice, this means that Cortiel ignores not history so much as definitional clarity. The present article critiques the so-called postcritical position for refusing to acknowledge the... more The present article critiques the so-called postcritical position for refusing to acknowledge the literariness of literature. As a case in point, it considers Toril Moi’s Revolution of the ordinary: literary studies after Wittgenstein, Austin, and Cavell, which has been greeted as a pivotal specimen of postcritique. Like other practitioners of postcritique, Moi would replace literary theory with an art of judgment, based upon good faith in, rather than suspicion of, the literary text. In theory, all that is needed to practice this art of judgment is a willingness to pay close attention to the specifics of the particular case. In practice, however, the postcritical claim to go beyond ‘the hermeneutics of suspicion’ is compromised by its refusal to confront the literariness of literary text, as the present essay demonstrates by subjecting Moi’s own reading of the particular cases of Paul de Man and Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik to rhetorical analysis.

As most often told, the story of Hawthorne's last phase runs something like this: when Nathan... more As most often told, the story of Hawthorne's last phase runs something like this: when Nathaniel Hawthorne returned to America from his seven years in Europe, his imaginative powers unaccountably but unquestionably expired. In stark contrast to his remarkable creative flourish between September 1849 and march 1853, in which he wrote nearly half of his collected works, the European sojourn had been, in literary terms, a period of drought. over six long years he had written little but descriptive journal prose, and when The Marble Faun finally arrived in 1860, it bore all the traces of a dwindling genius: overlong and cluttered with descriptions of Italian museums and works of art clipped almost verbatim from his very extensive notebooks, its plot was so vague that the author deemed fit to add a Postscript in order to defend its haziness. resettling in Concord, Hawthorne attempted, but failed to complete, some three different romances, and was able to finish only a series of sketches of England. Our Old Home, published in 1863, predictably reads like a romance with no imagination: all dull notebook jottings, and no imaginative action. The outbreak of the war, in combination with domestic problems and failing health, had left Hawthorne, in James t. Fields' words, a "broken-down author" (115), capable of producing only the husk of literature. This pathetic account of an author who at the height of his fame unaccountably loses his sense of direction is familiar to most of us. It has been told many times and in many different versions, but the outline and gist of the story have always remained the same: in the last years of his life, Hawthorne failed, and failed miserably, as a writer. The present issue suggests an alternative way of telling this story. In this rendition, Hawthorne comes back to America with a new artistic self-confidence. he has just finished the novel--or romance, as he was wont to call it--that he considered his finest. The Marble Faun is indeed a significant achievement. received as a masterpiece by the general public at the time, it is a novel that investigates the potentials and limitations of imagination in so profound a fashion that it took literary critics most of the twentieth century to catch up with its rhetorical strategies. Writing it at the tail end of a seven year expatriation from his home country, Hawthorne has gained a new understanding of how America is seen abroad, and of how Americans behave abroad. In addition, having spent several years performing the dreary task of American Consul in Liverpool, he has built up some capital--not as much as he had hoped, perhaps, but enough to allow him to concentrate on the vocation he had always set up for himself: that of a writer. Hawthorne remains remarkably true to this chosen vocation. his return to America coincides with the most tumultuous period in American political history, culminating with the outbreak of the Civil war in 1861. This worries him, yet it does not stop him from writing--on the contrary, it would seem to feed his imagination. domestic worries still vex him--Julian's schooling, Una's health, skyrocketing expenses for ill-planned renovations of his house (including the addition of a tower). he is often depressed, out of spirits. he is increasingly plagued by ill-health, and for the last six-months of his life virtually incapacitated for any kind of work. yet through it all, until the illness (cancer, the biographers now speculate) wholly takes hold of him, he keeps on writing, producing a body of literary writings in three and a half years which in quantitative terms is on par with his famed outpouring in the years of the American renaissance. between 1849 and 1853, Hawthorne wrote some 1300 pages: The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, A Wonder-Book, Tanglewood Tales, and the infamous campaign biography for his friend Franklin Pierce. half a decade later, between 1858 and 1863, he writes just as much: The Marble Faun, The American Claimant, Septimius, The Dolliver Romance, Our Old Home, and "Chiefly about war-matters," or some 1800 pages in all. …

The signal with such frequency indicates a fault of the outer race of the rolling bearing. A set of the digital synchronous filters was used for the K-15 vibration spectrum analysis. A procedure of filtration was performed by the computer software. The sychronous summation of the measured signals was carried out before the spectrum analysis. Two cases were considered: the engine with a small force due to unbalance (a small angular velocity of the rotor), and the engine with a big unbalance force (high angular velocity). In the first case, the outer race frequency was not observed, despite the existence of the vibration amplitude (caused by unknown disturbances) with such frequency before the synchronous summation. In the second case, the outer race frequency after synchronous summation has enlarged amplitude while other spectrum components in its vicinity have been damped. It underlines the usefulness of the synchronous analysis in the vibration diagnostics of the rotating machinery.
