Let us introduce two Kitties of the world heritage Nikko Toshogu
Shrine. The sculpture called "sleeping cat", which is said to be a
masterpiece of Jingoro Hidari in the early Edo period, installed on
the Sakashita gate of Nikko Toshogu is one of the national treasures.
Also, there is a sparrow sculpture behind the sleeping cat. They are
said to symbolize a world where even cats and sparrows can live
with peace of mind. There is also another theory that the cat
protect their master by pretending to be asleep.
In fact, Kitty, the white cat, looks a bit unhappy because
she's dressed in a spotted cat costume. "I'm actually a
more beautiful cat...".
The other masterpiece, "three wise monkeys" (see no evil,
hear no evil, speak no evil) is said to be the most famous
three wise monkeys in the world, and it is carved above the
Nageshi of the sacred stables. It shows the teaching of not
seeing, not hearing, and not speaking immoral things. The
teachings that resemble the three wise monkeys are found
all over the world, and it is said that they came to Japan
from China.
The expression on Kitty's face seems to say, "I can't keep
quiet anymore!". On both sides, it is accompanied by see
no evil monkey and hear no evil monkey.
