Christopher S. Collins, assistant professor of theology at the Saint Louis University, has written such a volume, which is ideally intended for beginning students of Benedict XVI who Collins rightfully claims is "a guide and an exemplar of a contemporary theologian who does theology…with a profound pastoral and spiritual sensibility" (xii). What makes this volume truly stand out is the synthesis of much of Ratzinger's thought processes, encompassing more than fifty years. This work is centered around Ratzinger's christological, ecclesial, and eschatological notions. In the chapter entitled "Jesus the Christ: Eternal Logos-Made-Love in History," we learn of Ratzinger's Christology, which he sees as foundational, "because in Christ not only has God spoken to humanity, but humanity is now able to enter into a new subjectivity with respect to God-to speak as a new 'I'" (58). The chapter entitled "Church as the Locus of Divine-Human Dialogue" is key, in that we learn that our reception of God's word through Christ incarnate "begets mission." Ratzinger affirms that his communion ecclesiology "is the movement of receptivity of the word of God, the second movement is the outward one to communicate the word to the world" (121). Collins' foray into the theological world of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI is highly recommended, both for beginning students, and institutions with collections dedicated to Papal History and Theology. It is extremely well-written and concise, inspiring the reader to more fully appreciate our last pontiff.
