Our thesis in this article is that economics as a discipline needs to embrace the reality of the natural society called 'family'. Without good, stable and well managed families, economics lacks the firm foundation for stability and market growth.

The research objectives were formulated to find out if Entrepreneurship skills, innovation skills, apprenticeship and business Skills have any role in enhancing the growth of SMES. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data collected, and come up with conclusion. it was found that Entrepreneurship training was found to have had a substantial impact on performance of enterprises thus influencing the growth of the businesses. The study recommends the need to adopt entrepreneurship education early in our education system to inculcate entrepreneurial culture in our country. It also recommends the training of entrepreneurs to empower them so that they can be able to acquire relevant skills.

The Potential of Alternative Fuels in Kenya: Entrepreneurial Opportunities from Imperfect Markets

Overview Kenya's fuel industry exhibits characteristics of both a highly inefficient market a... more Overview Kenya's fuel industry exhibits characteristics of both a highly inefficient market as well as those found in markets with potential for generating lucrative business, depending on whether it can solve the fuel supply equation. Given the logistical and financial restraints, Kenya's indigenous oil and gas industry does not seem viable in the short term as an aspiration of achieving self-sufficiency in fuels and energy. The ongoing increase in transportation fuel demand is putting upward pressure on oil prices, worsening Kenya's dependence on oil imports and deteriorating the country's balance of payment as a result, which together with the introduction of market-friendly policies, such as the elimination of the tax on ethanol, open up an attractive ethanol market. Methodology We take a market research analysis approach to the question before us: the fuel market in Kenya. A comprehensive review of Kenya's fuel industry reveals a number of constraints to achieving fuel security. Conversely, the same chain of constraints shows scalable and profitable market niches for a local fuel industry to emerge. We examine how Kenya may harness its strengths and geographic position within East Africa to play a strategic role in the fuel supply chain. We examine the following approaches: 1. Government policies toward alternative fuels. 2. Supply chain: a. Local production: Is there enough feedstock? b. Distribution channels. 3. Demand response. 4. Impact on Kenyan balance of payments. Results The current imperfect fuel market in Kenya creates fertile terrain for an alternative fuel industry to flourish. The conditions that create momentum are as follows: " Refined petroleum products are entirely imported in the absence of Kenyan indigenous oil and gas supplies. " Poor infrastructure and logistics create cost differences for fuels across counties, allowing niche markets for petroleum substitutes to prosper. " Growing demand puts a strain on existing infrastructure that needs substantial upgrading. Meanwhile, alternative ways of meeting the fuel logistics emerge from such physical constraints. " Market-friendly policy actions, such as the elimination of taxes on ethanol, may encourage consumers to take a second look at ethanol as a feasible replacement for petroleum fuels. Conclusions Our research concludes that by diversifying its fuel portfolio and by developing a local ethanol market, the Kenyan government would not only be more energy secure in the medium and long term but it would also improve its balance of payments with annual savings offsetting annual investment in the new fuel. Moreover, shifting investment from oil imports to local ethanol resources would have a significant positive effect on the national GDP, benefiting the country as a whole.

Regional integration in East Africa dates back more than a hundred years. This article provides a... more Regional integration in East Africa dates back more than a hundred years. This article provides a general synopsis of the East African Community (EAC) and traces the evolution of regional integration in Eastern Africa from colonial times to the present. The EAC, one of the most integrating Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in Africa, and the focus of this special issue, is currently made up of five independent countries: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania. The article describes the EAC's governance and institutional arrangements and outlines key integration achievements to date, notably the establishment of the Common Market, the promise to establish the monetary union by 2017, and the ultimate goal of achieving a political federation. Noting that as elsewhere in the world regional integration is hard and often protracted among sovereign states, the article discusses the EAC's challenges, opportunities, and drivers for deeper integration. It also provides a brief discussion of the region's natural resources, land, demography, and infrastructure. This provides the background for undertaking a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the EAC economies along the measures of governance, development capacity, economy, investment climate, and foreign direct investment inflows. Overall, the data paint a nuanced picture of impressive progress in the midst of daunting challenges. Looking forward, the article concludes that the prospects for deeper integration are promising, providing the EAC continues to build on its successes, confronts current and future challenges, and takes a holistic long-term approach to the effective management of deeper regional integration. We end by calling upon the international community to play a more strategic role, working with the EAC and member states for the effective and sustaining implementation of regional and continental integration.

This paper derives a model of organization life cycles in three steps: (1) by considering relatio... more This paper derives a model of organization life cycles in three steps: (1) by considering relationships of power distribution inside an organization with that around it, a typology of six configurations of organization power is produced; (2) by considering intrinsic forces that work within each of these configurations to destroy it, the likely transitions between these configurations are identified; and (3) by stringing these transitions together in sequences over time as organizations survive and develop, the model is developed. Some implications of such a model in a society of large organizations are addressed briefly in conclusion. From the earliest days of organization theory, notably in the writings of Max Weber (Gerth & Mills, 1958), the themes of ideal or pure types of organizations and of stages of organizational development have occupied an important, although never prevalent, place in the literature. The recent book by Kimberly and Miles (1980) entitled The Organizational Life Cycle may signal a growing interest in these themes or may, in fact, stimulate such an interest. This interest may say more about cognition than reality, reflecting simply the need to think about complexity in order to cope with it-a point made particularly well in Allison's (1971) study of different models to interpret decision making during the Cuban missile crisis. The present author believes, however, that there is more to these themes than cognition (Miller & Mintzberg, 1983), that ideal types reflect leading tendencies in organizations, and that stages of organizational development reflect intrinsic forces that arise in organizations to change them as they develop. Studies by Woodward (1965), Burns and Stalker (1966), Lawrence and Lorsch (1967), Miles and Snow (1978), and Miller and Friesen (1978, 1980a, 19Y80b, 1982a), among others, have provided empirical support for the existence of clusters of attributes, or "configurations," in organizations, which would seem to resemble ideal types. Theories of stages of organizational development go beyond idea! types, by postulating common sequences among them as organizations survive and develop over time. Explicit in a number of these theories is the notion of longer periods of stability interrupted by shorter ones of destructive change (Greiner, 1972). Starbuck has referred to these as 44metamorphosis models," pointing out that organizations may not grow in "a smooth continuous process" so much as in one "marked by abrupt and discrete changes" in their conditions and structure (1965, p. 486). In their research on "quantum" change, Miller and Friesen (1980a, 1980b, 1982a, 1982b) have provided some strong empirical support for such models. It is one thing, however, to produce systematic evidence to support configuration and metamorphosis in general; it is quite another to do so for specific sequences of transitions among particular types. The production of such evidence would call for the most ambitious sort of research, longitudinal in nature with a wide variety of organizations. Most related research has been narrower than this, focusing either on single transitions in specific types of organizations-for example, the shift from functional to divisionalized structure in giant American corporations, as in the research of Rumelt (1974)-or else on the sequence of transitions over the life of a single organization-as in Whyte's (1969) classic description of the development of a restaurant. These different studies nevertheless can be pieced together to describe what seem to be common transitions or even common sequences of transitions. Perhaps the best known sequence in the literature is that postulated for the business firm that survives and grows: creation in the form of simple, entrepreneurial structure, followed by limited growth; 207
