Elivis Costello- "Crawl into the USA"
If I had time to make an actual  steevsongofday entry, today's song would be "Crawl in to the USA" by Elvis Costello. It's a nearly (circa 1977-9) song that never got released on an Attractions album. It was played lvie extensively and the recorded version (available on the extende "This Year's Model" disc) features Mick Jones on guitar. It's the incredible drive, sardonic lyricism and crushing soundscape arrangement found on later Nick Lowe-produced albums. If you can find this anywhere, it certainly worth the download. Though you'd be better off buying the extended "This Year's Model". It will get stuck in your head. But I don't have the time to make a real entry, so that's all you get. : ) Current Mood: happy/tired/good |

Belle and Sebastian- Sleep the Clock Around
 The Boy With The Arab Strap marked Belle and Sebastian's return to album making, the UK indie pop charts, the radio and hearts of music lovers. Released in 1998, it gauranteed the band a place in music history and the minds of music critics. No matter how you break it down- by side, song, melody, arrangment, composition, lyrics or vision- The Boy With The Arab Strap is a masterpiece. There are many simply amazing songs on this album but Sleep the Clock Around stands out as an example of the fluidity and shimmery brilliance that is possible with the techniques of modern recording and the blending of electronic and acoustic instrumentation. This song, as many on the album and throughout the band's career, can be and is seen as the absolute pinnicle of semi-surrealist pop songwriting genious. But one cannot stop after this praise, and must take note of the stylistic integrity of the band's compositional prowess and the refined, deliberate and masterful execution of style. To be sure, the breathtaking beauty of Sleep the Clock Around is an exemplar of the many creative facets and faculties that ensure The Boy With The Arab Strap and Belle and Sebastian history, recognition and a warm, seething, introverted place in the middle of the hearts of many people across the globe. Erasure- Sometimes
 Originally released on 1987's Circus, the song shot to the number 6 position of the UK pop charts and heralded a large following for Erasure that lasts even today. The pop craftsmanship here is amazing- an overtly sexual and unavoidably catchy song. As an all synth-based act, the group is esteemed for it's use of synthetic textures and harmonic layering. The number of different instruments used on this track is astonishing- estimated at somewhere around 30. And to be able to flawlessly combine and integrate those instruments and sounds into a pop masterpiece is Erasure's true art. Sometimes was later released as a radio single, on a gay rights compilation album and on Erasure's 'best of' CD, Pop! 20 hits. All in all, this song stands as a prime example of Erasure's pop fortitude. American Music Club- Fearless
 On Mark Eitzel's final stint with the only classic 'post-rock' band in existence, Fearless is a gem expressing in musical simplicity Eitzel's emotional complexities. AMC's swan song San Francisco is a blend of pop mastery and personal reflection. Successfully and sensually combining these two facets of songwriting has never been easily accomplishment even for an (over-)experienced band like AMC. But Fearless melds these facets seamlessly into expressive and completed union. Being one of the softer songs on the album, this piece lets the vocals and harmonies shine over the rock-steady basslines and melodious pedal steel guitar. Siouxsie & the Banshees- Cities In Dust
 Originally released on 1986's acclaimed Tinderbox the song appears twice- as a reprise at the album's close in extended version form. Owning an original copy of this album has since become somewhat of a darkwave/post punk rite of passage. Cities In Dust was recorded at a time many believe the band was at their early peak combining through-composed orchestral string arrangements with death rock fortitude and Siouxsie's beautifully unordinary voice to create a sound both intriguing and memorable. NoFX- The Decline
 Experimental punk rock? NoFX pulled it off in this 18 minute punk epic released on singer/bassist Fat Mike's fledgling label 'Fat Wreck Chords'. Always known for their witty lyrics and musical prowess, NoFX did what many though impossible: compose and record a punk song that is almost 10 times as long as any normal song in the genre. This alone would not have been a feat, and could have easily been a dismal failure. But, the ever-evolving NoFX are at the top of their game, composing a jaw-gaping piece that rivals the form and beauty of even the most highly regarded baroque-era masterpieces. The instrumentation is superb blend of blaring guitars, a series of banging, brilliantly punk beats presented in rapid secession under the well-tempered sampling and trumpet playing of El Hefe. Fat Mike has never before developed such rich instrumental harmonies, and who else but this weathered and, dare I utter it, mature punk band could create, let alone make you still want to mosh to, a barrage of touching almost choral vocal harmonies about the decline of American society and crushing the state. The Charlatans UK- And If I Fall
 The layering of electric, acoustic and synthetic instruments on this track is absolutely breathtaking. Timbres collide in a washing cascade between the guitar-driven verses and a chorus of angelic vocal harmonies over a trance-induced hip-hop percussion section. Strangely enough this is one of the only songs on their 2001 release, Wonderland, in which the band did not secure the aide of outside musicians. It also represents the last of the three successive tracks produced by the band. Listen to this one on a set of good headphone folks, the stereo effects will blow your mind. Ani DiFranco- Worthy
 This song makes the perfect opening to the Not A Pretty Girl album and exemplifies both Ani DiFranco's exquisite and uniquely expressive guitar style and the brilliance of the album's musical arrangement- while Ani plays all of the guitars on the entire album it's hard not to imagine a full, tight and well-weathered band performing this track. Ani has been compared to the likes of Bob Dylan in her approach to the poetry of lyric-writing and it is easy to see the slam poet in Ani breaking though in the song's climactic ending. But it is Ani's identifiably emotion guitar playing that continues to amaze. The audio engineering on this song is also inscrutable making it not only an epitome of lyrical poeticism but a mastery of production as well.
