It is concerned with how Boy's from The Blackstuff (BBC, 1982) helped shape an era of political television drama during the 1980's, with a focus on its societal impact at the time. Bernard Hill (2022, 8:19) describes, "It's a piece for its time and everyone identified with it". Also paying attention to other dramas that faithfully encapsulate tone, atmosphere and aesthetic of political and social reflection, whilst remaining as key historic moments in television. Furthermore, by analysing the social reflection of this piece, it allows for the exploration of how BFTBS managed to resonate so well with audiences of the time. By dissecting the political and cultural impact of the early 1980's, this allowed for comparison with contemporary British political television drama, to truly gauge how far the social impact has differed, but also to examine how or if anything has remained a constant. Overall, exploring how these immediate attitudes compare to those of the past.
