About the Scholarship
Entry Deadline: January 31
A scholarship of $750 shall be awarded to a successful SRMTA member or Affiliate SRMTA member wishing to pursue further studies locally or abroad, and who returns to teach in Saskatchewan.
Studies may include the completion of a designated diploma or degree. (Examples include CC/CNCM/RCM Associate or Licentiate degrees)
Upon completion of studies, the recipient will write a brief report for inclusion in Opus.
Awarded monies must be used as outlined on the application, if not, monies need to be returned to SRMTA. Monies are to be used within the calendar year of the awarded scholarship.
Previous candidates may apply again after a five-year time lapse.
The application deadline is January 31 of the competition year.
Rules & Regulations
The scholarship winner will submit a written report upon completion of their studies for the next deadline of Opus Journal. The opportunity to present a workshop to a local branch also exists.
An annual scholarship of $750 shall be awarded to a successful SRMTA member or Affiliate SRMTA member who is pursuing further studies locally or abroad and intends to (or continues to) teach in Saskatchewan.
The pursued field of study should advance the applicant’s skills as a music teacher, positively impacting their work with students. Studies acceptable for consideration include:
– working toward or completing a music degree at a university.
– earning a degree or taking pedagogical training from a conservatory (Trinity, RCM, CCM, CNCM).
– becoming certified in other types of teacher training programs which occur over an extended period of time (MYC, Orff, Suzuki, etc).
– taking further education (group or private) which allows an affiliate member to attain full membership status.
This scholarship is not intended to be used for weekend courses, travel expenditures, or attendance at workshops or conferences. Upon completion of studies, the recipient will write a brief report for inclusion in Opus. Dorothy Williamina Bee (1910-1986)

Dorothy Williamina Bee was born on November 1, 1910 in Lemberg, Saskatchewan and moved to Regina at a young age. Dorothy played a string bass for the Regina Symphony Orchestra from 1943 to 1971, she also played and taught piano, was an author, editor and co-editor of material used to advance the teaching of music for the Western Board of Music. She introduced over 1000 new pieces as Head of the Piano Syllabus Committee from 1968 to1974.
Dorothy studied with William M. Buckley (1928-1936) and Lyell Gustin (1936), Master classes were taken with Rosalyn Tureck in 1940. Between 1944 and 1948 Dorothy studied with Max Pirani, Victor Babin for a year in 1960 and Andre Previn in 1970 and 1971.
Dorothy began as a faculty member at the Conservatory of Music in 1946 and began teaching at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus in 1949. Very active in the area of music in Saskatchewan, Dorothy was an adjudicator and consultant for the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association, and an examiner for the Western Board of Music and Mount Royal College in Calgary. She co- authored, with Gordon Wallis, three volumes of studies for the piano which were especially designed to help students with specific technical problems.
From 1955 to 1957 Dorothy was president of the Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers Association (SRMTA), and Vice-president of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association (CFMTA). In 1976 Dorothy was editor-in-chief of eight graded volumes of piano repertoire.
Dorothy Bee retired in 1979 and died in 1986.
