This paper analyses the writings of two African-American women writers Harriet Jacobs and Adrienn... more This paper analyses the writings of two African-American women writers Harriet Jacobs and Adrienne Kennedy. It argues that their works challenge patriarchy and contemporary Anglo-American feminist discourses. It uses as its critical framework postcolonial theories of "othering" as enunciated by critics like Said and Spivak, to demonstrate the way in which Jacobs and Kennedy manipulate standard American English, to highlight the linguistic power of African-American women's writings.

From Darkness to Light: Shakespeare's King Lear and the Indian Gunas

This paper analyses Shakespeare's tragedy King Lear in the light of the Indian Guna theory to... more This paper analyses Shakespeare's tragedy King Lear in the light of the Indian Guna theory to depict the process of inner maturity that takes place within the hero's mind. Shakespeare's focus in this play (as with his other tragedies) is on the soul of the hero where the real action takes place. In probing into the core of the king, the ace dramatist delineates the process of a gradual evolution of Lear's consciousness from a dark state of Tamas, through the active Rajas, and its final state of Sattva and beyond. The soul of this powerful tragedy lies in Lear's transcendence even beyond the Sattva, which alone proves that "ripeness is all."

Starting with a brief introduction of bhakti is Tamil literature, the paper analyses the bhakti movement, the tenets of Vaishnavism, and the contribution of the Alvars. This short paper concentrates on certain seminal aspects Antal's Tiruppavai, and her Nachiyar Thirumozhi. It probes into two major leitmotifs as evident in her compositions: that of the parai in Tiruppavai and the conch in the Nacciyar Tirumoli.

Starting with a brief introduction of bhakti is Tamil literature, the paper analyses the bhakti movement, the tenets of Vaishnavism, and the contribution of the Alvars. This short paper concentrates on certain seminal aspects Antal's Tiruppavai, and her Nachiyar Thirumozhi. It probes into two major leitmotifs as evident in her compositions: that of the parai in Tiruppavai and the conch in the Nacciyar Tirumoli. The paper also comments upon the uniqueness of the female register in her works and the multiple diatribes that Antal had to wage in a constrictive space.

Absract: This paper considers the Indian devotional prayer Aditya Hrudayam as a way of worship of... more Absract: This paper considers the Indian devotional prayer Aditya Hrudayam as a way of worship of the divine forces through Nature. In the course, the paper looks at the genealogy of sun worship in world cultures, particularly in the Indian culture, since the Vedic times to firmly ground its relevance in the contemporary world. Later it discusses the manifold ways through which Aditya is worshipped, the various manifestations of Aditya, the benefits of the worship and the universal significance of the prayer not merely in the present age but also in the ages to come. The paper concludes with the timeless relevance of the worship of this primordial ball of fire. The Aditya Hrudayam is a unique hymn in the pantheon of Indian devotional verses, owing to the immense power embedded in the mantra, that rejuvenates the sagging spirits of not a mortal human being, but a divine god like Lord Rama, in the Yuddhakanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. The powerful hymn that offers rich tributes to the primordial ball of fire, the source of all life, the origin of all energy and prana, remains perennially relevant not just to humanity of a bygone era, but to one and all in the years to come.

This paper analyses the dramatic discourse of two African American women dramatists, Sonia Sanche... more This paper analyses the dramatic discourse of two African American women dramatists, Sonia Sanchez and Ntozake Shange. It uses as its critical framework Erik Erikson's theory of identity formation to examine their discourse, which challenges patriarchy and contemporary Anglo American feminist writings. It analyses the multiple ways in which Sanchez and Shange invent standard American English to present a unique African American women's perspective. Their discourse, this paper argues, thus challenges the prevailing notions of power, truth, knowledge and ideology to give voice to the previously silent black women.

This article is a translation of the story of the life of Karaikkal Ammai, a sixth century saint ... more This article is a translation of the story of the life of Karaikkal Ammai, a sixth century saint poet of India. Her story has received considerable attention in the Tamil Saiva religious hagiography Cekkilar's "Periyapuranam" which is a Hindu devotional text often referred to as the fifth Veda. It contains the lives of the 63 saints of the Tamil land. The story of Karaikkal Ammai is unique even in the bhakti movement since she is the only woman saint poet who transcends gender to attain the divine union with the Lord. This is a humble translation made by me in poetic form since most of the translations have been made in prose and also because Cekkilar's original composition was in a poetic form.
