Shímén (石門) is the northernmost district on Taiwan, named for a sea-eroded rock arch first recorded in 1694. The district includes Cape Fugui (富貴角), Taiwan’s northernmost point, where a distinctive black-and-white striped lighthouse built by the Japanese colonial authorities has stood since 1897. Strong northeast monsoon winds have made Shimen a center for kite flying; the tradition of launching octagonal kites during the Double Ninth Festival persists along the coast from Tamsui to Jinshan, and an annual kite festival draws enthusiasts from across Asia.
