However, the country is still generally described as an ethnically and culturally homogenous society due to the prevalent use of the national language, symbols, and traditions. Given the widespread availability of free Korean language courses through both site-based and online real-time video lectures, it is not surprising to hear about foreigners' increased use of and proficiency in the Korean language. This study provides a critical review of perceptions of marriage migrants about the great importance of Korean language and how they lack awareness about their rights and duties to use their mother tongues in the course of their lives in South Korea.

Teacher repetition in SLA has been considered to be a vital language input that assists language ... more Teacher repetition in SLA has been considered to be a vital language input that assists language comprehension and acquisition and therefore, their linguistic or functional patterns have been of analytic interest. Teacher repetition is, however, also important for its pedagogical role in leading nonnative students through English lessons. In this study, the analytic emphasis is placed on specifying teaching actions associated with repeated language use and its effect on L2 classroom interaction. Following conversation analysis (CA), the present study examined English lessons in two Korean kindergartens in which a native teacher of English interacted with nonnative children with minimum English proficiency. The sequential analyses of the class sessions identified three distinctive pedagogical actions arising from teacher repetition: eliciting synchronized English responses from the student cohort; having students recognize and practice a target language item; and pursuing particular answers. These findings provide procedural accounts of practical routines through which language teachers organize children's participation and guide them through the English lessons. From the descriptions presented in this study, researchers and practitioners can make informed judgments about what pedagogical actions are performed and what challenges are faced in teacher repetition for young learners of English.

Ang kontemporaryong Korea ay pangkalahatang inilalarawan pa rin bilang isang bansang homogeneous o magkakatulad na may isang etniko at kultura sa kabila ng mabilis na pagtaas ng bilang ng mga dayuhang migrante, tulad nang nakikita sa umiiral na paggamit ng isang pambansang wika, simbolo, at tradisyon. Dahil sa malawakang pagkakaroon ng mga libreng kurso ng wikang Koreano sa pamamagitan ng parehong mga aralin sa site-based at online real-time video, hindi nakakagulat na marinig ang tungkol sa pagtaas ng paggamit at kasanayan ng mga dayuhan sa wikang Koreano. Ang pag-aaral na ito ay nagbibigay ng kritikal na pagsusuri sa mga pananaw ng mga migranteng kasal sa Koreano tungkol sa kahalagahan ng wikang Koreano at ang kakulangan nila ng kamalayan tungkol sa kanilang mga karapatan at tungkulin na gamitin ang kanilang sariling wika sa paraan ng kanilang buhay sa South Korea.

일반적으로 현대 한국은 외국 이주민 인구의 빠른 증가에도 불구하고 공통의 국민적 언어, 상징, 전통의 지배적인 사용으로 인해 단일한 민족과 전통을 유지한 국가로서 묘사되고 있다. 온/오프라인을 통한 무료 한국어 과정이 광범위하게 제공되는 것을 생각하면 한국어를 사용하는 외국인의 증가와 그들의 유창한 한국어에 대해 듣는 것은 더이상 놀랍지 않다. 본 연구는 한국에서의 일상적인 삶속에서 한국어를 중요하게 인식하는 것에 비해서 모국어 사용에 대한 권리와 의무에 대해서 자각하지 못하는결혼 이주민들의 인식에 대한 비판적인 평가를 제공한다.

The global use of English has amounted to variations in the language, as well as different percep... more The global use of English has amounted to variations in the language, as well as different perceptions towards the linguistic variations. In this study, a Philippine English (PhilE) speech sample is used to elicit and analyze the particular sound segments and suprasegmental features that Koreans perceive as variations from a standard variety of English. The study also explores whether the respondents would choose the same speaker as their English teacher. The results show that Koreans are especially sensitive to certain vowel and consonant variants of PhilE. As for suprasegmentals, the respondents' neutral ratings suggest that they do not have well-defined opinions towards the speed, pauses, stress, and volume exhibited by the PhilE speaker, but some degree of doubt is evident in relation to their perceived correctness of the speaker's intonation, which is possibly due to a preconceived notion that variations from a norm-providing variety of spoken English indicate incorrectness. When confronted with the choice of having the speaker as their English teacher, more than half of the participants gave a negative response. Such results pose implications on the use of English as an international language.
